Tickets available for Repertory Dance Theatre performance

PORT ANGELES — Tickets are available now for a performance of the Repertory Dance Theatre of Salt Lake City, Utah, on March 4.

The performance will be at 2 p.m. that Sunday at the Port Angeles High School Performing Arts Center, 304 E. Park Ave.

Tickets are $18 to $40 for adults and $10 for youth 14 and younger.

They can be purchased at www.jffa.org, Port Book and News in Port Angeles and Joyful Noise Music in Sequim.

The special production, “Excursion,” will features three works by artists commenting on the resilience of the human spirit and the strength of community.

“Mazurkas,” by José Limón was created as a tribute to the heroic serenity of the Polish people after World War II. With music by Frédéric Chopin, this “classic” emphasizes elegant and expressive movement, the hallmark of Limón choreography.

“Dabke,” by Zvi Gotheiner is a contemporary work inspired by ancient Middle-Eastern folk dance. Blending Arab pop music and the use of dabke steps, Gotheiner uses the power of dance to reflect upon conflict in the Middle East and more universally, conflict in the world.

“Bolero,” by Joanie Smith and Daniel Shapiro features the music of Ravel to explore the power of community and the endless nature of physical struggle.

The Repertory Dance Theatre (RDT) is the oldest repertory dance company in the nation. Unlike conventional modern dance organizations, RDT focuses on a diverse range of modern dance styles and choreographers that they pair together in dynamic and unexpected performances.

“For more than 50 years, RDT has pushed the boundaries of modern dance, while preserving and celebrating its legacy,” said Dan Maguire, executive director of Juan de Fuca Foundation for the Arts.

“It was radical when Utah modern dancers beat out the big city stalwarts to receive a Rockefeller grant establishing RDT as the nation’s first repertory dance company. Today, RDT is just as revolutionary as they were in 1966.”
