PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Port Angeles wrestlers open with two huge dual-meet wins; Roughrider swimmers splash Klahowya

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys wrestling squad is off to a fantastic start, with wins over their two biggest Olympic League 2A Division rivals, North Mason and North Kitsap, to begin the season.

The Riders beat North Kitsap handily 45-25 Thursday night take command of the Olympic League 2A. The Vikings had been ranked No. 7 in the state.

“That’s the two toughest teams in the league and we got by them,” said coach Rob Gale. Earlier in the week, the Riders beat North Mason 40-39, going to the eighth tiebreaker, which is who scores the first points in the final match, to beat the Bulldogs.

“We wrestled great [against North Kitsap]. If we had wrestled that well against North Mason, we would have beaten them by a lot more points,” Gale said.

Winning their matches against the Vikings were Scott Hedin at 120 pounds; Daniel Basden, by pin at 126 pounds; freshman Gavin DeVore at 138 pounds; Zach Gavin at 145 pounds; Jackson Larsen by pin at 152 pounds; Riley Gale by pin at 170 pounds and Trevor Shumway at 182 pounds. The Riders also won by forfeit at 106 and 285 pounds.

Port Angeles (2-0) took a contingent to the Larry Brown Invitational in Fife on Saturday. The Riders next meet will be another league dual at Kingston at 7 p.m. Thursday.
