SPORTS: Top-ranked Chemeketa ends Peninsula Pirates’ men’s soccer season

SALEM, Ore. — Peninsula College men’s soccer season came to an end one game short of its third-straight NWAACC Final Four with a 3-2 loss to the No. 1 ranked Chemeketa Storm on Saturday.

The Pirates (12-5-5) scored first when John Hogo found Brent Ricigliano for a goal in the 12th minute.

Chemeketa struck back quickly, putting goals past the Pirates’ goalkeeper in the 16th, 25th and 30th minutes.

“[They all came] from very questionable goals,” Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said.

Peninsula regrouped in the locker room and “had the run of play for the entire second half,” Chapman said.

The Pirates could manage just one goal in that second half, an 88th minute score from Cory Matthews off of a corner kick played in by Aaron Oppeltz.

Peninsula was unable to find the equalizer as time ran out.

Peninsula outshot the Storm 13-10 for the match.
