RENTON — Sequim High School qualified six swimmers and divers at the West Central District meet Saturday for the Class 2A state boys swimming championships.
State is scheduled Friday and Saturday at King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
The Wolves captured third place in 2A competition at the district championships at Hazen High School.
Sequim’s 200-yard medley relay team claimed second place and a state berth by allocation.
The team of sophomore Noe Calderon, senior Parker Steichen, junior Thomas Moores and senior Triston Cortani finished in a time of 1 minute, 58.16 seconds in the finals race.
Diver Connor Christianson set a 2A district record by taking first in diving with a total score of 234.05.
He earned a state trip by allocation, too.
“Christianson shattered the previous best score set by Max Flock from Sequim last year,” Sequim coach Linda Bingler Moats said.
“This is a fantastic accomplishment for an athlete new to diving this year,” Moats added.
Tanner Estep also is going to state for the Wolves as a part of the medley relay team.
In addition, Sequim’s 200 freestyle relay swam its best time to date by a few tenths of a second, Moats said.
“But this was really a great effort since Kris Petersen, new to the sport of swimming, joined the relay [Friday],” Moats said.
“Parker Steichen had the best split of his tenure on the team.”
“It was a great day for us,” Moats said. “We finished third overall of the 2A teams. We’re very happy with that!”
Gymnastics PA state qualifiers
AUBURN — Port Angeles High School is sending five gymnasts to the state championships this weekend at the Tacoma Dome.
All five who qualified for the West Central District championships Saturday advance to state in the same events they competed at subdistricts and later at districts.
Qualifying for state in all-around on vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor were freshman Cecily Schwagler and sophomore Allison Hodgin.
Qualifying on floor and vault was junior Jayden Hoover, on vault was sophomore Haley Love, and on bars was senior Mckenna Bukovnik.
“Each of these girls qualified to state on every event they competed,” coach Melanie Hyatt said.
Along with qualifying to state, some of the girls placed in their district events:
Schwagler claimed sixth in district for Class 3A on beam with a score of 8.35
Hodgin took 11th on vault with an 8.15 while Hoover was 12th on vault with an 8.125.
Hoover also was 12th on beam with a 7.7 while Hodgin took 11th on bars with a 6.5.
“The girls did a great job this weekend and it paid off,” Hyatt said.
“We will be headed to state on Friday.”
