ARLINGTON — Sammy Rae tossed her first no-hitter of the season to lift the Quilcene Rangers to a Sea-Tac League softball win over the Highland Christian Knights.
The Rangers blanked the Knights 10-0.
Highland Christian batters struggled to even make contact as Rae struck out 13 over six innings.
On offense, Rae contributed to her own cause with a home run.
Kelsy Hughes got the biggest hit for Quilcene when she blasted a grand slam in the Rangers’ eight-run sixth inning to break the game open.
Despite the lopsided final, the score was close for most of the game.
The Rangers led only 2-0 after five innings before their bats exploded in the sixth to put the mercy rule in effect.
Savannah Drew and Patrice Beringer both went 2 for 3 at the plate for the Rangers, who improved to 11-3 on the season and 10-0 in league play.
They close out their regular season when the same two teams meet again today in Quilcene.
A victory in that game would earn Quilcene an automatic berth in the 1B state tournament.
New swim coach
PORT TOWNSEND — Peter Braden has been hired to be Port Townsend’s next swimming coach, athletic director Patrick Kane announced.
Braden has an extensive background in both swimming and coaching.
He has swam competitively since he was 10 years old, including college where he was a member of the Central Washington University men’s swimming team.
Braden has served as a coach for various teams over the years. Most recently, he was the head coach of the Port Townsend club swim team from 2008-10.
Track and Field
Nisqually League
The Chimacum Cowboys are looking for a good showing from Justin Morris, Daryl Settlemire and Krista Hathaway at the upcoming 1A tri-district championships at King’s High School’s Woolsey Stadium.
Settlemire will participate in the discus throw after recording a 119-6 throw for third place at last week’s league meet.
Hathaway represents the Cowboys in the javelin throw after a 98-4 third-place throw at the league championships.
Morris will compete in the 400-meter dash after taking third at the league meet.
Chimacum also will send the girls third-place 4×100-meter relay team, made up of Alyssa Hamilton, Alisha Leoso, Sam Cerna and Hailee Johnson.
Thursday will be the 1A tri-district preliminary races and the finals will be held Saturday.
Evergreen League
Shane WhiteEagle will lead the Forks squad into Friday’s 1A District IV championships at Kalama High School.
WhiteEagle finished first in the 200-meter dash and second in the 100-meter dash at the Evergreen League Championships last week.
He also had a nice showing in the shot put where he placed second after recording a 41-8.
WhiteEagle isn’t the only shot put representative for Forks, as Sydney Christianson will represent the girls team at the district meet after claiming third at the league meet.
The Spartans also look for a good showings from Kari Larson and Kristen Larson.
, who will compete in the 800-meter run and 3200-meter run, respectively.
Kari Larson captured a league title while Kristen Larson took third place.
