SEQUIM — Sequim fought back from a 15-point halftime deficit against 3A Central Kitsap but couldn’t overcome some early defensive lapses and turnovers in a nonleague girls basketball loss to the Cougars.
“We came out flat tonight, didn’t play good defense and turned the ball over because we were rushing to make passes,” Wolves coach Joclin Julmist said.
“We also didn’t shoot the ball particularly well. We missed a bunch of easy layups and couldn’t make anything from the outside. We fought hard to get back into the game, [but] we must be better in all areas.”
The Wolves collectively shot just 14-for-53 (26.4 percent) from the field, including 4-for-18 on 3-point attempts.
Jelissa Julmist led Sequim with 11 points and added five rebounds and four steals. Julmist had a tough night from the field, shooting 2 of 10, but did knock down 7 of 8 free-throw attempts.
Sophomore Jolene Vaara posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds plus three steals and three assists.
Hannah Bates added eight points, six steals and four rebounds while Malorey Morey had six points and three boards.
Lauryn Stephens also added six for Sequim.
“We had a few swing players come up and give us some valuable minutes,” Julmist said.
The Wolves (2-0, 3-1) hosted North Kitsap in a home contest late Tuesday and visit North Mason on Thursday.

SILVERDALE — The fast-paced Class 3A Cougars proved to be too much offensively for the Wolves in a nonleague clash Monday.
Isaiah Moore and Jaydin Possin each had 11 points to lead Sequim. Tyler Mooney added 10 and Cole Smithson had nine in the paint.
The Wolves (0-3, 1-4) visited No. 1 North Kitsap late Tuesday and will host North Mason on Thursday.

JOYCE — Weston Hart led the Loggers with 17 points while Hayden Ferrell chipped in 15 in a win over the Warriors’ JV.
“After playing a top five-ranked Crosspoint varsity last week, the Warriors sent their JV and it was a good learning experience for all,” Crescent coach Chris Ferrier said.
“We were able to get a lot of playing time for our younger guys, who have been committed to the program culture and have been showing up and doing their part,” Ferrier said. “We got to play some different combinations and try a few different things offensively that we haven’t had to approach yet.
“It was a good game for playing some different people in different spots as well.”
The Loggers (1-0, 3-2) visit Mary M. Knight on Saturday.
