PENINSULA SOCCER: Men, women finish league undefeated

PORT ANGELES — The Pirate soccer women, winners of the Northwestern Athletic Conference North Division, finished off their regular season with a 10-0 win over Edmonds.

The women, ranked No. 1 overall in the NWAC, finish regular season undefeated in league play. They are 15-0-0 in league play and 16-1-1 overall. They will get a first-round bye in the NWAC playoffs and will play at home at noon Saturday against the winner of Tacoma (No. 2 seed in the West) versus Walla Walla (the No. 3 seed from the East).

The men, also champions of the North Division and ranked No. 1 in the NWAC, won their match, as well, beating Edmonds 4-0. They also get a first-round bye and will play in the second round of the NWAC playoffs at 2 p.m. at home against the winner of Tacoma (No. 2 seed in the West) versus either Walla Walla or North Idaho (No. 3 seed in the East).

If the Pirates win their playoff openers, they make it to the NWAC Final Four, which will be played No.v 11-13 in Tukwila.

The women got goals from eight players, including two goals and an assist from leading scorer Hoku Afong and two goals from Jayna Morikawa. Also scoring were Audrey Barham, Eleanor Small Heidi Vereide, Maddy Parton, Emelie Small and Kelly Kevershan.

Picking up assists were Cierra Hamilton, Eleanor Small, Emelie Small, Coby Yoshimura, Barham, Kevershan, Emilee Greve, Parton and Leslie Cisneros.

The women, despite being second in the NWAC with goals with 84, have a balanced attack as their leading scorer Afong, is 11th in the league in goals with 14. Afong is also ninth in the league in points with 35.

However, the women have eight players who have scored at least five goals and 13 players with at least eight points.

Peninsula men 4, Edmonds 0

While Peninsula (14-0-1, 16-0-2) won going away, it was another slow start for the Pirates as they did not score their first goal until the 41st minute. Juan Carrillo broke the 0-0 tie with a goal, assisted by Kevin Medina.

The Pirates then erupted for two quick goals within two minutes early in the second half in the 47th and 49th minutes. Joey Hollimon scored with an assist to Miguel Valderrama, then Michael Day added a goal with an assist to Alex Ramos.

Salvador Vargas finished off the scoring in the 65th minute. His goal was assisted by wHollimon.

Cesar Gervacio finishes the regular season fifth in the NWAC in scoring with 28 points and 13 goals. Carrillo is eighth in the league in scoring with 26 points and 10 goals. Hollimon also has 19 points on seven goals. The Pirates have 10 players with at least eight points.
