CHIMACUM GOLFER SHELTON Washburn shrugged off a late quadruple-bogey with a birdie on the final hole to claim the fourth annual Pacific Northwest Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championship recently at Marine Drive Golf Club in Vancouver, B.C.
Washburn, a member of the Port Ludlow team during May’s Peninsula Cup, shot rounds of 77, 75 and 75 to defeat Ian Shopland of Saltspring Island, B.C. and Noel Pumfrey of Victoria, B.C. by one stroke apiece 227-228.
In a post-tournament interview conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association, Washburn discussed bouncing back from what he termed a “hiccup,” his quadruple-bogey on the 404-yard par-4 17th hole.
“I was a little red-hot from taking an eight on 17, so I hit last and hit a good 3-wood down the center [of the 421-yard par-4] to about 180 [yards].
“I then hit a 5-iron about 6-8 inches from the back of the green, 20 feet from the pin and the putt fit my eye.”
Washburn described Marine Drive Golf Club as a narrow, shot-shaping type of course, where “driver was the second choice on many of the holes.”
He praised the tournament event staff and volunteers for their efforts during the tournament.

Peninsula qualifiers
Peninsula Golf Club members Gary Thorne and Mike Dupuis teed off Tuesday in an 18-hole qualifying event for the 2013 U.S. Senior Open.
The qualifier was held on the Rope Rider course at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum.
The Port Angeles pair were competing against each other and 57 other pro and amateur golfers for two spots at the 2013 U.S. Senior Open Championship July 11-14 at Omaha Country Club in Omaha, Neb.
Their scores came too late for my column deadline, but I’ll have an update next week.
Clallam best ball
SunLand Golf & Country Club in Sequim and Peninsula Golf Club in Port Angeles will co-host the second annual Clallam County Best Ball this weekend.
SunLand will host play Saturday, with Peninsula hosting the final round Sunday.
Shotgun starts are planned for 9 a.m. each day.
Entry is $50 for SunLand and Peninsula players, and $80 for nonmembers.
A $4,800 purse (based on full field) is up for grabs.

Ludlow golf camp
Youth ages 6-16 can participate in Port Ludlow’s inaugural golf camp, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. beginning this Saturday and continuing each week until Aug. 3.
Cost is $100 per participant, and includes a shirt, hat and lunch on the last session.

Centennial scramble
The Sequim Centennial Golf Scramble is set for Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim on Saturday, July 6.
Two-person teams will tee off in an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Cost is $80 per person, and includes lunch and tournament prizes.

Junior golf camp
Discovery Bay will host a junior golf camp from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 9-11.
A snack and prizes are included in the $50 entry fee.

Summer league slated
Discovery Bay’s Summer League will begin its eight-week schedule with a team scramble on July 18, and wrap with a final on Sept. 19.
The weekly events will be held Thursday nights at 5:30 p.m.
Four-player teams are needed, and all teams are responsible for their own substitute players.
The format will be net match play, each hole will be worth one point, with one additional point awarded to the winner of the match.
A qualifying nine-hole score must be submitted before July 25, or the player will play as a zero handicap for the first week.
Handicaps will adjust weekly on an up-one, down-three scale.
Team entry fee is $200, nonmember green fees each week will be $10, with weekly honey pots and KPs.
Team entry fee will be paid out to the top team points leaders at the end of the season.
An end-of-season barbecue and KP shootout is planned for Sept. 19.
Summer skins game
Discovery Bay hosts a nine-hole gross and net skins game with KPs each Monday at 5:30 p.m.
Green fees are $10 for nonmembers.
SunLand junior camp
SunLand is taking registrations for its junior golf camp, set for 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. July 22-25.
Golf skills, sportsmanship — including rules and etiquette — golf and “near-golf” experiences will be taught.
Kids will be able to participate in fun games and activities, including a water-balloon toss, and each student will receive a PGA Sports Academy book and bag tag.
Cost is $75, and registration is available at the clubhouse or at www.sunlandgolf.com.
The camp is limited to the first 25 who register.
YMCA tourney in PT
Warm temperatures and sunny skies greeted golfers Saturday for the annual YMCA Fundraiser tourney at Port Townsend Golf Club.
Nobody claimed the Chevy Cruze offered up by Koenig Chevrolet of Port Angeles for a hole-in-one on the par-3 170-yard No. 7 hole.
Ditto for the snazzy scooter a hole-in-one hitter would have won on the 160-yard 16th (No. 7 from a different teebox) from Gary’s Auto Sales of Port Townsend.
Better luck next time for those prizes.
A female foursome of Wanda Synnestvedt, Jane Peoples, Emily Cook and Vicki Handyside earned top gross division honors with a 58, with Buddy O’Meara, Joe Hansen, Woody Woodley and Al West first in the net division with a 49.6.
Free junior golf in July
You’ll have to wait for the calendar to catch up, but beginning Monday, Port Townsend is offering a free junior green fees with a paid adult green fees.

Friends of OCS tourney
The inaugural Friends of Olympic Christian School Charity Golf Tournament is set for Cedars at Dungeness on Saturday, July 20.
The scramble format event has a 9 a.m. shotgun start, and the $85 entry fee includes green fees, a bag of goodies, use of cart and a buffet lunch.
Players will have the chance to win a $10,000 prize for a hole-in-one on Cedars’ fourth hole, and a new Nissan courtesy of Wilder Auto Center on the 17th hole.

Healthy Families event
Healthy Families of Clallam County is the beneficiary of an inaugural golf tournament at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course in Sequim on Saturday, July 27.
Proceeds from the event will support survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse in Clallam County.
The event begins with a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start at Cedars, and entry is $90 for the public.
Cedars members should inquire at the pro shop at 360-683-6344 for their entry fee.
Entry includes a golf cart, green fees, box lunch, winner prizes and an awards ceremony. Several other contests are planned, and there will also be a hole-in-one prize.
Registration forms must be received by July 13 to ensure a spot.

The tournament reflects an expanded effort by the Olympic Peninsula Boeing Bluebills to assist programs that address domestic violence and sexual assault.
The Bluebills, which include retirees from Boeing and other volunteers, donate time and skills to various community projects.
Last year, the Bluebills hosted a successful golf tournament at Port Ludlow on behalf of Dove House in Port Townsend.

U.S. Women’s Open
Televised coverage of the U.S. Women’s Open is at noon Thursday and Friday on ESPN2, and Saturday and Sunday on NBC.
The ladies will be tackling Sebonack Golf Club in the Hamptons on the eastern end of Long Island.
It’s a gorgeous, newer course, designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak, and the coast-line hugging holes will look great on television.
