GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL: Riders get back on winning track

Sequim crushes Kingston to go to 9-0

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak in a big way, dominating North Kitsap at home en route to a 59-47 win.

Despite some of the Roughriders’ recent struggles, they are sitting solidly in second place in the Olympic 2A League with a 4-1 record after Tuesday’s win.

The Vikings came in to the game with a chance to move into second place in league. The Riders quickly jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the first quarter. Anna Petty hit a 3-pointer at the end of the first half and the Roughriders went on a 7-0 run to begin the second half as a 27-19 lead got stretched to 37-19 early in the third quarter.

Port Angeles maintained an 18- to 21-point lead for most of the rest of the second half as the game was more lopsided than the final score showed.

“One of our goals going into the night was increased offensive production — better shot choices and higher percentage shooting. That was a key to success for us, as we shot well both from inside and on 3-point shots,” coach Michael Poindexter said.

Six Port Angeles players totaled seven 3-pointers, with Petty making two. Lindsay Smith led the team with 16 points and five steals, while Petty had 13 to go along with nine assists and four steals. Paige Mason had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Lexie Smith had 10 rebounds.

Port Angeles (4-1, 4-6) next plays at Kingston (0-5, 0-7) at 7 p.m. today.
