GIRLS BASKETBALL: Roughriders get revenge on North Mason

East Jefferson wins seventh straight; Forks win third straight

BELFAIR — The Port Angeles girls basketball team got a measure of revenge against a North Mason squad that beat the Roughriders earlier this year and moved into third place in the Olympic League with a 58-33 win.

The game was particularly late Friday night, beginning at nearly 9 p.m., but the Riders didn’t let the late hour affect them, jumping out to a 16-9 lead in the first and leading the entire game. Early this year, a much-improved North Mason team beat Port Angeles 30-29.

“As in our first meeting with North Mason in early December, our defense was solid,” said coach Michael Poindexter. “The obvious difference in this game was our patience and execution against the Bulldogs’ 2-3 zone. We cut back on turnovers from our first meeting with them and relied somewhat less on outside shooting.”

Poindexter said the Riders took 12 of their 22 3-point attempts in the second quarter.

“We made a better effort to get the ball inside in the second half, which paid off in 22 points inside on field goals and another eight points from the free-throw line in the half,” he said.

Lindsay Smith had her second straight huge game with 24 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Lexie Smith had 12 points, 12 rebounds and seven steals, while Teanna Clark had seven points, six assists and four steals.

“Mikkhia Stevens, Sariah Doherty, and Cayleigh Alward all came off the bench to play outstanding defensive games,” Poindexer said.
