CROSS COUNTRY: Riders, Wolves race at Olympic League Jamboree

BREMERTON — Port Angeles cross country runners opened the season with a 2-mile run at the Olympic League Jamboree at the Kitsap Fairgrounds on Wednesday.

“It was a warm day, but the athletes did great and had fun,” coach Angie Gooding said.

Gooding said the Riders’ standout male runners are seniors Easton Dempsey and Andre Campbell and sophomores Henry Wendell and Mason Mai.

Dempsey ended up sixth in 10 minutes, 54.26 seconds. Campbell came in eighth (11:08.79). Henry Wendel finished 16th, Mason Mai was 26th in 12:08.09 and Justin McLarty 27th (12:08.1)

“Freshman Mason Cummings impressed us all,” Gooding said. “He came out of nowhere and had an excellent debut.”

Cummings finished fourth in the boys junior varsity race, missing out on third by 0.19 seconds.

The Roughrider boys placed third as a team with 83 points. Bainbridge totaled 41 points to place first. Sequim was fifth with 97 points.

Junior Reid Randall earned a top-10 finish in 11:15.58, placing 10th.

Adrian Osborne came in 14th (11:24.86), Gavin Tupper was 21st in 11:57.81, Jonathan Tipton was 29th (12:20.91) and Josh Wakefield, Jackson Hines and Axel Swanson ran together, finishing 34th through 36th.

“Female runners Leia Larson and Storey Schmidt had great races and will have promising seasons,” Gooding said. “The team has many new freshmen that will contribute to PA’s success.”

Larson placed third with a time of 12:44.96. Schmidt was 19th (14:59.28).

Freshman Mariah Disque ended up 30th in 16:18.13, and Alice Shields was 31st (16:21.04) for the Riders.

Port Angeles placed third as a team with 96 points. Bainbridge was first with 31 and Sequim finished sixth (119).

Sequim freshman Emily Bair debuted with an 11th-place finish (14:11.77). Junior Birdie Pyeatt came in 23rd (15:17.68) and Gwyneth Voyles was 28th in 16:08.58.
