AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Peninsula Soccer League begins fall season

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula Soccer League, a coed league for adult recreation soccer players, kicked off the fall season Sunday with five matches at Sigmar Field.

Salazar Painting, Forks FC, Bandidos FC and Pura Vida came away with opening-day wins.

Salazar defeated Pantry & Latch 3-1, getting two goals from Jose Bladimir and one from Diego Sanchez. Alex Lopez had the lone tally for the Pantry & Latch club.

Forks FC got by Los Primos by the same 3-1 score, getting goals from Hugo Sandoval Jr., Julio Moroto and Gabriel Julio. Daniel Torres scored for Los Primos.

Bandidos FC shut out Windermere 2-0, getting goals from CJ Daniels and Chris Lopes.

Pura Vida was just too much for Ediz Hook FC, winning 13-0. Ashby Mikai had four goals and Rafa Flores three to lead the winners.

In Sunday’s other match, Strait Slice and High Energy Metals played to a 4-4 tie. Jimmy Quigley scored two goals, while Jay Marazon and Luke Strong-Cvetich added solo goals for the pizza club. Jake Hughes scored a pair of goals and Noah Brasher and Aldo Garcia also scored for High Energy.

Matches run on Sundays through early November. The league serves as a fundraiser for Pirate Athletics.

Battle of the Axe

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles wrestling squad is hosting the annual Port Angeles Battle of the Axe dual team tournament at the Port Angeles High School gym on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024.

The tournament is looking for 16-team brackets and an early response is helpful in meeting this goal. Showers and hospitality rooms for coaches and referees will be available. There will also be concession stands and a round-robin bracket for girls. The tournament will be on www.trackwrestling.com.

The cost is $300 per team and there will be T-shirts for the top team and trophies for the top two teams.
