OLYMPIA — Several Olympic Peninsula seniors brought home gold medals from the Washington State Senior Games track and field championships held at Olympia High School this weekend.
Bob Sheedy of Port Angeles was first in several events in the 80-84 age group. He was first in the high jump (1.05 meters), first in the long jump (2.09 meters), first in the hammer throw (22.05 meters) and first in the shot put (8.93 meters).
Sheedy was also second in the triple jump (4.94 meters), second in the discus (21.04 meters) and second in the javelin (21.71 meters).
Leroy Martin of Port Angeles took first in the 85-89 50 meters in a time of 11.95 seconds and first in the 100 meters in 24.44.
Julie Snyder of Port Angeles took first in the women’s 50-54 discus (20.28 meters) and the shot put (8.56 meters).
Cynthia Goldner of Sequim was second in the women’s javelin (16.7 meters) and third in the shot put (6.53 meters).
Suarez day-to-day
Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suárez, one of baseball’s top trade-deadline targets, exited early Monday night after he was struck on the right hand with a fastball from Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest.
Suárez said after the game that X-rays on the hand were negative. He is considered day-to-day and will receive further testing.
Suárez, the Diamondbacks’ 34-year-old third baseman and a former Seattle Mariner, is perhaps the most coveted bat ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline. He fits a clear need for contenders such as the Chicago Cubs, the Mariners and the Detroit Tigers. Suárez is a rental bat with 36 homers, an MLB-leading 87 RBI and a career-best 143 OPS+ this season.
