Swing music to be performed in Coyle

COYLE — The Jonathan Doyle Swing Trio will bring Swing Era music to Coyle in the Concerts in the Woods at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The concert will be at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road. Admission will be by donation.

Complimentary cookies and coffee will be served at intermission.

Series organizer Norm Johnson said he grew up hearing music from the Swing Era — 1930s-40s — but because it was his parents’ music, he discounted it until about 10 years ago when he heard it on his car radio.

“I realized I knew that music and now suddenly I liked it. In fact, I loved it,” Johnson said.

“Then recently I was so pleased to find that we have our own Swing Years recreator right here in Jefferson County in the form of Jonathan Doyle. And Jonathan has put together a trio of some of the greatest swing players from across the country. This next concert in Coyle is going to be one not to miss for swing lovers.”

The trio is made up of Doyle on bass saxophone, Noah Hocker on trumpet and Jake Sanders on guitar.

“I’ll be playing bass saxophone to round out the group for this concert, which is a little bit different than my main work as tenor saxophone or clarinet player, Johnson said that Doyle told him.

“It’s a pleasure to play bass role with such a fine group. And bass is something I’ve been spending more and more time digging into. Our program for the evening will be a mix of traditional jazz and swing music and originals.”

Doyle has played with the Mighty Blue Kings, the Four Charms and worked with Chicago’s emerging improvisers such as Josh Berman, Jason Adasiewicz, and Design Flaw.

In Austin, Texas, he played with such acts as Willie Nelson and Asleep at the Wheel, and the Jim Cullum Jazz Band.

More recently he has started performing with Naomi & Her Handsome Devils and Hal Smith’s Swing Central and the Casey MacGill Orchestra.

Hocker has performed with such swing music bands such as Jonathan Stout, Gordon Webster and Michael Gamble.

He grew up in Portland, Ore., and was a regular attendee of Port Townsend Jazz Camp.

Sanders is a guitarist, bandleader and arranger whose musical career began in New York City at the end of the last century. He has worked as a street performer and for a variety of bands.

He has performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival, the Detroit Jazz Festival and the Brooklyn Folk Festival as well as at clubs, dance halls, and theaters throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

He is a regular performer in-residence at Cracovia 32 in Mexico City.
