TRACK AND FIELD: PA, Sequim girls do well at Olympic League meet

BELFAIR — The Port Angeles and Sequim girls track teams both had excellent showings at the Olympic League track and field championships this weekend with the schools combining for a total of seven individual and relay first-place finishes.

For the Port Angeles boys, Hunter Flores set a personal record in the javelin, winning that event with a throw of 147 feet, 10 inches.

For Sequim, Dawn Hulstedt won the girls 800-meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 16.62 seconds, a personal record. She also came in second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:17.91.

The Sequim 4×200 relay team (Bridget Pyeatt, Kyle Peters, Hulstedt and Ruby Moxley-Horgan) finished first in a time of 1:49.66. Finally, the Wolves’ Clare Turella won the high jump with a leap of 4-10.

For Port Angeles, Teanna Clark won the league championship in the javelin with a throw of 123-7. It was her fourth first-place finish of the year.

Port Angeles’ Leia Larson won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:56.72, while Faerin Tait won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.87 seconds, a personal record. Tait also finished second in the 300 hurdles in 48.44.

The Port Angeles 4×400 team of Brooke Pierce, Storey Schmidt, Larson and Tait won with a time of 4:08.30.

Overall, Port Angeles finished fifth in league with 73.5 points. Sequim was sixth with 65. Bainbridge won the meet with 172 points.

Flores’ javelin throw was the top finish for any Olympic Peninsula boy, but others had solid days.

Port Angeles’ Brody Pierce was second in the triple jump with a distance of 43-7½. He was also third in the long jump with a personal-record leap of 20-3¼.

Easton Dempsey was third in the 800 meters with a personal-record time of 1:58.08 and the Port Angeles 4×100 team (Hunter Eller, Logan Wilson, Liam Wilson and Pierce) was third in 44.49. Richard Peterson was third in the discus with a personal-record throw of 116-9, while Jude Wallace was third in the pole vault with another personal-record effort of 12-6.

Sequim’s top finish was by Sean Southard in the javelin. He was barely edged out by Port Angeles’ Flores with his throw of 146-5.

Port Angeles finished fifth with 80 points, while Sequim was eighth with 21. Bremerton won the boys meet with 172.5 points.

The West-Central District 3 track and field championships will be held May 21 and May 23 at Bremerton High School.

North Olympic League

JOYCE — The Clallam Bay boys and girls won the North Olympic League championships held this weekend.

Clallam Bay had eight championships in the boys events and six in the girls.

For the boys, Clallam Bay’s William Hull won three events — the 200-meter run (24.69 seconds), the 300 hurdles (43.64 seconds) and the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches). Cyrus Politte won two events — the 100 hurdles (18.56 seconds) and the triple jump (37-2).

Coletyn Hull won the 400 meters in a time of 56.44, Uriel Cruz Lopez took first in the 3,200 in a time of 12:39.86, and the Clallam Bay 4×400 relay team (Cruz Lopez, Kayden Vincent, Brandon Adams and Jordan Angulo) won with a time of 4:43.71..

Crescent’s Donovon Allen had a good meet with three first-place finishes. He won the 800 meters (2:35.66), the 1,600 meters (5:42.80) and the javelin (111-4).

Logger Dominiq Sprague won the long jump (17-11) and the Crescent 4×100 relay team (Eli Thompson, John Lium, Liam Sprague and Jax Sprague) took first in a time of 53.69.

Neah Bay’s Daniel Cumming dominated in two events. He won the shot put with a solid distance of 45-0, more than 10 feet beyond second place. He won the discus with a throw of 132-2, winning by 30 feet. Both efforts were personal bests.

Neah Bay’s Makyah Chambers also won the 100-meter run (12.16 seconds, personal record).

For the girls, Clallam Bay’s Bethany McKee won the 800 meters (3:39.79), Kyleigh Richardson won the 100 hurdles (21.47 seconds) and Simona Cruz-Lopez won the 3,200 (16:10.88).

Kaleeka Mendoza-McCarty won the high jump (4-6) and the triple jump (30-4), while the Clallam Bay 4×400 relay team (Cruz-Lopez, Desirae Angulo, Autumn Tyree, Brilei Hull) won in a time of 5:36.30.

Crescent’s Alexis and Katelyn Dunavant had a solid meet. Alexis Dunavant won the shot put (32-11) and the discuss (93-6), edging her sister in both events, while Katelyn Dunavant won the javelin (83-9).

For Neah Bay, Angel Halttunen had a solid meet, winning the 100 meters (13.36 seconds, personal record) and the 200 meters (27.52 seconds). Caylee Moss won the 1,600 (5:55.28) and the 3— hurdles (55.56 seconds), while Qwaapeys Greene won the 400 meters (1:07.52).

The Neah Bay 4×100 relay team of Alexa Greene, Qwaapeys Greene, Brianna McGimpsey and Halttunen took first in 53.20, while the Neah Bay 4×200 team (Qwaapeys Greene, Alexa Greene, McGimpsey and Halttunen) won the 4×200 in 1:51.64.

Finally, Neah Bay’s Amilia Corpuz took first in the long jump with a leap of 14-10.

The Clallam Bay girls had 69 points to 62 for Neah Bay and 21 for Crescent. The Clallam Bay boys had 64 points to 58 for Crescent and 34 for Neah Bay.
