TRACK AND FIELD: PA girls win league meet; Sequim boys tally six first places

POULSBO — The Port Angeles girls, with five first-place finishes and 37 top 10 finishes, won the Olympic League 2A meet, nipping North Kitsap for the title.

The Roughrider girls ended up with 600.5 points to North Kitsap’s 571. North Mason was a distant third with 304 points.

The Sequim boys won six events and finished third with 351 points to 368 for North Mason and 797 for North Kitsap. The Roughrider boys were fourth with 322 points.

The Sequim girls ended up seventh with 166 points.

Gracie Long won three events for the Riders, the 1,600 meters (in 5 minutes, 20.87 seconds), the 3,200 meters (in 11:55.89) and the high jump with a personal-best jump of 5 feet, 2 inches.

At the moment, Long has the third-fastest 1,600 time in the state among 2A girls, the fifth-fastest 3,200 time and the fourth-best high jump.

Long and her teammate Maddie Dougherty had an interesting duel on the day. Dougherty finished second in the 1,600, 1.38 seconds behind Long, and she finished second in the 3,200, 1.37 seconds behind Long.

Long came within a whisker of winning four events as her 800 meter time of 2:23.65 was only 0.50 of a second behind first-place Annika Taylor of North Kitsap.

Millie Long won two events, the 200 meters (27.29) and the 300-meter hurdles (47.70). She nearly won three events as her 100-meter hurdle time of 15.90, a personal best, was just 0.17 of a second behind Lauryn Chandler of Bremerton.

Murray Bingham and Fischer Jensen both won multiple events for Sequim. Bingham won the 800 meters (2:00.14) and the 1,600 meters (4:30.71), while Jensen won the 110-meter hurdles (16.76) and the 300-meter hurdles (41.67). Bingham also helped Sequim’s 4×400 team take first with a time of 3:38.40. Other members of the 4×400 were Alec Shingleton, Logan Laxson and Darren Salazar.

Port Angeles’ Liam Clark won two events: The triple jump with a personal-best distance of 41 feet, 3½ inches and the high jump with a personal-best leap of 5-11.

Sequim’s Riley Cowan also won the javelin with a throw of 162-2.

Sequim and Port Angeles move on to the Olympic League 2A Subdistrict meet next Saturday at Bremerton.
