BREMERTON — Third time was the charm for the Sequim baseball team.
The Wolves scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning to knock rival Port Angeles out of the bi-district playoffs Saturday at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.
The eruption in the ninth spoiled an eight-inning pitchers’ duel between Cole Uvila of the Roughriders and Sequim’s Nick Johnston and Jake Hudson all pitched a gem.
Sequim extended its season and was set to play the winner between No. 1 seed White River and Olympic in another loser-out game later Saturday evening in the consolation semifinals at Foss High School in Tacoma.
The Hornets and Trojans were locked in a one-run game in the fourth inning late afternoon.
The semifinal winner will play in another loser-out game in the consolation final at Foss at 4 p.m. with the winner going to state as the No. 4 seed.
In the match-up between the two North Olympic Peninsula rivals in the consolation quarterfinals, the Wolves took a quick 1-0 led in the first inning and the score stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh.
That’s when home team Port Angeles scored a game-tying run to send it into extra innings.
Uvila, who went 2 for 5 at the plate, hit a two-out single to bring the tying run home.
The score stayed the same until the flood gates opened for the Wolves in the top of the ninth.
Up until then, it was quite the pitchers’ duel as Uvila gave up just one run, in the first inning, through eight innings.
Uvila struck out six and scattered five hits. He came out of the game because of a high pitch count.
“Once we got [Uvila] out of there, we were able to do something,” Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen said.
Nick Johnston started on the mound for Sequim, giving up no runs and just four hits while striking out five in six innings.
Hudson (6-2) pitched the final three innings, giving up just the one run in the seventh and four hits while fanning two.
Michael Konopaski came in for the Riders in the ninth and took the loss.
Tyler Campbell continued his late-season hitting streak for the Wolves by going 2 for 4 with three doubles and two RBIs while Tyler Johnston went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a walk.
Hudson was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two walks.
For Port Angeles, Easton Napiontek went 2 for 4.

BELLINGHAM — Quinn Eldridge tossed a complete-game one-hitter to lead the Cowboys past Cedar Park Christian on Saturday afternoon at Joe Martin Stadium.
The win puts Chimacum in the tri-district championship game against Charles Wright.
Against Cedar Park Christian, Eldridge struck out 11 and only threw 69 pitches in six innings.
“He was dominant, played is A-game,” Chimacum coach Jim Dunn said.
“He really brought the noise.”
Eldridge received more than enough offensive support.
Landon Cray was 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs. Mike Nordberg contributed a pair of RBIs.
“We did real well as a team,” Dunn said. “We were patient at the plate and took advantage of their pitching inconsistencies.”
Chimacum has already beat Charles Wright twice this season by scores of 13-0 and 11-1.
But Dunn points out that the Tarriers come into the championship game following an impressive win over Meridian.
“Meridian didn’t hit the ball well,” Dunn said. “But that probably had a lot to do with Charles Wright’s pitchers.”
Boys Soccer
Port Angeles 1, Sumner 0
TUKWILA — The Roughriders are back in the state playoffs for the first time in 12 years.
The No. 3-seeded Riders, who haven’t played at state since capturing second at the 4A level in 2000, beat No. 2-seeded Sumner in the loser-out West Central District game at Foster High School on Saturday.
The Riders will open 2A state play Wednesday, site and team to be determined.
No other details were available for the Sumner game.
Softball
Sequim, PA lose
BREMERTON — The Wolves and Roughriders both dropped their opening-round games in the 2A sub-district playoffs on Saturday at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.
Defending state champion Sequim lost to Franklin Pierce, 8-7.
Later Saturday, the Wolves played the loser of Interlake and Kingston for the No. 3 seed in the district tournament.
Meanwhile, Port Angeles was shut out by White River, 7-0.
The Riders played the loser of the Sumner and Lindbergh game on Saturday evening in a game that determined the seventh place and eighth seeds in the district playoffs.
