CHIMACUM — A 10-0 victory over your archrivals is usually cause for celebration.
Chimacum baseball coach Loren Bishop was hardly in the mood after his team’s six-inning mercy rule victory over Port Townsend on Friday.
The winless Redskins were, after all, as short-handed as it gets.
They brought just nine players to the game because of spring break. And once one of them got hurt late in the game, they didn’t even have enough for a full outfield.
So a 10-run win wasn’t quite good enough for Bishop’s Cowboys, a team that has designs on returning to the 1A state tournament for the second straight year.
“I’m growling at the boys because they are not playing the way we need to play,” Bishop said. “This is a team that you don’t even give them any hope. You don’t play to them.”
Chimacum (3-1 in league, 6-2 overall) did manage to bash 13 hits as a team in the win, led by two-hit games from Dylan Brown, Egan Cornachione and Quinn Eldridge.
Pitchers Austin McConnell and Joe Modispacher combined to pitch a six-inning shutout on the mound.
McConnell earned the win, striking out four and giving up just two hits in four innings of work, while Modispacher struck out five in the final two frames.
Ryan Aumock was forced to pitch the entire game for the Redskins, who fell to 0-8 overall with the loss.
“You play with what you’ve got, and you’ve got to give [Port Townsend head coach] Tom Webster credit,” Bishop said.
“He was going to play this game no matter what. He was not going to call this game.”
Bishop’s words weren’t quite as complementary the PT parents who pulled their children from games this week for spring break trips.
“What are teaching your kids if you do it?” Bishop said. “To me, that’s how you have a program is by staying with something.
“I can work around a kid missing practice if he’s got a good reason.
“If you’re going to miss a game, it’s got to be a hell of a reason.”
Chimacum heads to Vashon on Monday to resume its 1A Nisqually League schedule.
Port Townsend hosts Bremerton on Monday.

SILVERDALE– The undefeated Roughriders gutted out an impressive Olympic League victory against the Trojans on Friday night.
Playing without seven of their top eleven players, the Riders (3-0) needed several third sets to get the win.
“I knew with spring break and illness, today was going to be tough,” head coach Brian Gundersen said.
“Our lineup consisted of mostly freshmen and sophomores, and they really stepped up today.”
Gundersen handed out players of the match honors to both of his doubles teams.
The No. 1 team of Paige Witherow and Kelsey Coffman defeated their opponents 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Danielle Rutherford and Kyrie Reyes also needed three sets (2-6, 6-2, 6-4) for their victory as the No. 2 doubles team.
In singles play, Alexis Corn (6-3, 6-1) and Shayla Bohman (6-1, 6-3) also were victorious for Port Angeles.
The Riders host North Mason on Tuesday in an Olympic League match.
