SPORTS BRIEFS: OPRA a gold, two silvers at American Lake; Crescent playoff game canceled

Eighteen Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association members competed in the American Lake Classic in Lakewood last week.

Hosted by Commencement Bay Rowing Club, the 5K head race started at the far east end of the lake, ran along the lake’s north shore, then swept around Silcox Island to the finish in front of the Commencement Bay boathouse. Over 20 clubs from throughout the Northwest competed at this regatta.

Noteworthy finishes were silver medalists: The novice 4x+ boat with Lica Kennedy, Ella Ventura, Harrison Fulton, Jack Feingold and coxswain Shannon Callahan and the women’s Jr. 1x with Veronica Kennedy. Calum Swinford in the men’s 1x was a gold medalist.

Olympic Peninsula Rowers faced small crews from Idaho and Canada several weeks ago and last weekend they went up against programs of similar sizes in western Washington as well as a few juggernauts from the Seattle area.

The juniors performed well proving to be a formidable opponent against some of the newer and smaller teams that OPRA had scrimmaged against in the past. They were also within striking distance from the larger, well established teams.

Clallam County 4-H at shooting competition

CARLSBORG — Clallam County 4-H was narrowly beaten by North Gwinnett High School from Sugar Hill, Ga., last week in a National Air Rifle League competition.

Clallam County 4-H lost 1,383-1,356.

With the win, North Gwinnett High School is in first place in their Division with a 3-1 record. North Gwinnett High School was led by Shreya Sastry, who shot a 358.

Snapping a two-match win streak, Clallam County 4-H dropped to 2-1 on the season. Clallam County 4-H, based in Carlsborg and coach by Seth Geniesse, is currently in second place in its division. Clallam County 4-H was led by Levi Bergren who shot a 359. The remaining contributing members were Bailey Geniesse with a 354, Cheyenne Maggard with a 354, Mikayla Geniesse with a 289 and Joseph Maggard with a 234.

These two teams competed in the Junior Rifle Club Precision Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System. The league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs.

Crescent football playoff canceled

JOYCE — The Crescent football team was scheduled to play a Quad-District playoff game against Taholah in Forks at 6 p.m. today, but Taholah forfeited the game.

Crescent (3-3) qualified for the postseason with its win over Tulalip Heritage Saturday as the No. 3 seed out of the Northwest 1B Football League. Crescent will play Neah Bay at 6 p.m. Friday in Forks in a playoff game.
