Madison helping team get off to undefeated start
ANCHORAGE — Port Angeles High School graduate Jessica Madison has helped the University of Alaska-Anchorage women’s basketball team get off to a 3-0 start, with wins over Pac-12 team Utah, and Holy Names and Chaminade University.
Madison, a junior guard, had a career high of 21 points to go along with seven rebounds, three steals and no turnovers against Holy Names and is currently tied for first place in the GNAC in assist/turnover ratio.
She is also averaging 16.5 points per game and is shooting a team best of 50 percent overall with no turnovers.
The Seawolves will be hosting the Great Alaska Shootout tournament in their new Alaska Airlines Arena this week, and continue to work toward their goal of going to the NCAA tournament again this year.
White Crane medals
OLYMPIA — White Crane Martial Arts of Port Angeles, fielded a team of eight competitors last month at the Governor’s Cup in Olympia.
The team, composed of martial artists who had never been to a big tournament before, returned with 10 medals.
Angelina Sprague, age 10, was third in black belt forms and third in black belt sparring.
Her sister Clarissa Sprague finished second in both board breaking and sparring and third in black belt forms for her age group.
Also in the kids divisions, twin black belts Zachary and Justin Irving both took fifth in the black belt forms division, and Georgia Shirley was second in all three of her division — sparring, forms and high kick board break.
Tristan Young fought to second in the boys heavyweight color belt sparring and adult competitor Christopher Martinez also took second in sparring.
All sparring was full-contact World Taekwondo Federation style, using protective equipment.
White Crane Grandmaster Robert Nicholls received a plaque for school support and Master Robert Nicholls Jr. worked all day coaching the team in the various events.
