PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Sequim wins fifth straight game — against team from Australia

SEQUIM — The Sequim High School boys basketball team won its fifth straight game after holding off a foreign invader Tuesday night.

The Wolves dropped St. Luke’s Grammar School of Sydney, Australia, 65-52, getting a second straight 20-point game from senior guard Nick Camporini.

Sequim kept the Australians at bay most of the first half before eventually pulling away in the final two quarters.

“I was really pleased with how our reserves played,” Sequim coach Greg Glasser said.

“They came in and gave us a great effort and really energized our team.”

Camporini dropped in 24 points for the Wolves one night after going for 20 in a big win over Olympic League rival Bremerton.

Teammate Jason Brocklesby worked up a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Sequim shot out to a 10-point lead by the end of first quarter but allowed the Aussies to pull back within five points with the score at 33-28 at the half.

The Wolves came out hot in the third quarter, extended their lead once again and didn’t look back.

Sequim (3-1 in league, 6-1 overall) plays at Klahowya tonight at 7 p.m.

PUYALLUP — The Cowboys ran into an inspired group of Cougars in their Nisqually League opener Tuesday night.

Playing their first game since longtime assistant coach Mike Kilcup passed away Sunday, the defending Class 1A state champions laid the wood to an undermanned Chimacum team.

“I don’t think they need much motivation anyway,” Chimacum head coach Jim Eldridge said. “We didn’t match their intensity at all.”

Chimacum was missing a pair of key players in forward Mason Moug (injury) and guard Rafael Pagasian (ineligible), but the Cougars took little pity as they piled up 57 first half points on their way to a rout.

Chimacum (0-1, 2-2) hosts Charles Wright on Friday night in another Nisqually League matchup.
