PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Port Angeles, Sequim soccer teams both win

Port Angeles golf girls in top spot in Olympic League

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles scored two late goals in the final 20 minutes to pull away from a pesky North Mason boys soccer team in a 4-1 win at Wally Sigmar Field at Peninsula College on Tuesday.

“The Riders didn’t play their best soccer Tuesday, but they got the needed result against the Bulldogs,” coach Chris Saari said. “The game was closer than the score dictates as the Bulldogs made it 2-1 in the 62nd minute.”

Port Angeles (5-2, 7-3-0) solidified its third-place position in the league, going up 1-0 when Kanyon Anderson followed up a Matthew Miller shot, sending the rebound in from close range in the 11th minute.

Miller converted a penalty kick in the 22nd minute after Oliver Martinez drew a foul in the penalty box.

North Mason scored on a Riders’ own goal in the 62nd when Port Angeles defender Grant Butterworth’s attempt at clearing a cross deflected off his shin and into goal.

Jacob Weaver scored in the 73rd. “He collected a loose ball in the middle of the box and beat the North Mason goalie to the left side of the goal from 16 yards out,” Saari said.

Miller made some Bulldog-beating moves near the penalty box before connecting on his second score in the 75th.

Saari named Miller the team’s offensive player of the match. He named Aurelio Wilson-Rojero and Taihvan Lyle for their defense and Weaver and Anderson in transition earned praise for their play.

“The Riders will look to clean some things up before they end a five-game home stand on Friday at home versus Kingston,” Saari said.

Sequim 3, Kingston 1

KINGSTON — The Wolves overcame a missing piece, controlled the match and received a boost from a player returning from injury in a road win over the Bucs.

Sequim received goals from Josh Alcaraz assisted by Colin Feik in the 28th minute and a second goal from Nico Musso for a 2-1 halftime lead.

The Wolves kept Kingston at bay until an insurance goal in the final 10 minutes from Preston Kurtze.

“He decided to take on a few players and busted through the back line to finally find the net,” Wolves coach Dave Breckenridge said. “This was a big moment for him and well deserved. He has been putting in the work and physical therapy after his surgery last season and this was exactly the motivation he needed. We are all hoping he will stay healthy and finally finish a full season in his senior year.”

Breckenridge said goalkeeper Nolan Valenzuela put in good work in net for the Wolves (4-4, 4-4).

Sequim hosts Bremerton (2-6, 2-8) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Girls Golf Port Angeles 211, Bainbridge 216

BAINBRIDGE — The Roughriders took over the top spot in the Olympic League standings with an impressive road win over second-place Bainbridge at Wing Point Golf & Country Club.

Mia Neff led Port Angeles with a round of 52, while Claire Osterberg, Autumn Wilson-Rowland and Malena Marquez all shot 53.

Izzy Spencer had a 66 and Brenna Furnice shot 67.

“It was especially satisfying for our seniors who had not beat Bainbridge ever, to win this match,” coach Mike DuPuis said. “Now that they are in our [Class 2A] league, they were 3A last year, it was most important to win this match to take over first place as we were both undefeated.

“It really puts us in the drivers’ seat to win our league, and that was one of our goals going into this season. I am so proud of these young ladies. Their hard work is paying off, and with the Olympic League championships just around the corner it’s a good time to be playing well.”

Port Angeles hosts Olympic at 3 p.m. today at Peninsula Golf Club.

Sequim 204, North Mason 216

ALLYN — The Wolves’ collective strength lifted them to a win at Lakeland Village Golf Course.

Sara German and Kendra Dodson each posted nine-hole rounds of 50, while Raimey Brewer shot a 51 and Gabriella Hood added a 53.

Mari Morris was match medalist with a 41 for North Mason.

The Wolves will honor seniors Chloe Tweter and German in their last home match today at The Cedars at Dungeness.
