PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles upset rival Sequim 26-24, 16-25, 16-25, 25-18, 15-12 in a seesaw Olympic League volleyball match
“What a fun, exciting and intense match tonight,” Roughriders coach Christine Halberg said of Thursday’s win.
The Wolves ran out to leads of 6-0 and 15-8 in the first game before Port Angeles rallied.
“We were missing too many serves and making unforced errors, and PA caught up and won,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said.
“We played better the next two games, made more of our serves and won.
“We fell apart in the fourth game, could not pass in serve-receive and once again made too many unforced errors.
“By their second server we were behind 14-5 and could not recover.”
The teams headed to the decisive fifth game tied 2-2.
“The fifth set was filled with high energy from beginning to end and fans were on the edge of their seat,” Halberg said.
“We were up 6-4 when Kiana [Robideau] went back to serve for a five-point run to go up 11-6.
“Sequim came back with their own five-point run to tie it
up 11-11.”
Robideau helped wrap up the match with two late kills, her ninth and 10th of the match, and Port Angeles won when Sequim made a hitting error off of a serve by Alyssa Sweet.
“We couldn’t pass again in the fifth [game],” Webber Heilman said.
“We made a good run when Maddie [Potts] caught us up to 11-11, but made too many errors at the end.”
Robideau added six aces, six assists, one block and 19 digs.
Emily Johnson tied with Robideau for the team-high in kills with 10. Johnson added three aces, 20 digs and 17 assists.
“Emily served 18 of 19, and in game four she started us out with a strong 5-1 lead,” Halberg said.
Brennan Gray had 18 digs, and Nikki Price had 13 digs and an ace.
“Callie Hall came in sets four and five and racked up 16 assists,” Halberg said.
“She did a great job coming in after sitting three sets and connecting with her teammates.”
Genna Orr went 23 of 25 serving with four aces.
“She served eight points in a row in game four to put us up 14-5, and [had] a five-point run in game one, bridging a seven-point deficit and bring [us] closer [to down] 14-16,” Halberg said.
“Devin Edwards added a kill and an ace and put up a good block for the defense to dig around.”
Webber Heilman did get some solid performances from her team in the loss.
“Megan [Breckenridge] was our leader, scoring 13 kills, earning 15 perfect passes and playing great defense with 35 digs,” Webber Heilman said.
“Ella [Christiansen] and Maddie [Potts] contributed to our offense with 12 and 10 kills, respectively.”
It was Sequim’s (5-4, 6-5) second loss this week.
The Wolves now sit in a three-way tie for second in the Olympic League standings with Bremerton and Kingston.
Sequim hosts league-leading North Kitsap (8-0, 9-1) on Tuesday.
Port Angeles (3-6, 3-7) visits Olympic (4-4, 5-6) on Tuesday.
Cowboys earn two league wins
CHIMACUM — Chimacum improved to 3-0 in Olympic League 1A play with a pair of wins over Port Townsend and Coupeville last week.
The Cowboys beat the Redhawks in three games 25-21, 25-15, 25-11 Tuesday.
Taylor Carthum was 18 for 20 serving with four aces and 17 assists for Chimacum.
Alina Preston was a perfect 13 for 13 serving with three aces to go along with three kills and five digs.
Audrey Thacker went 11 for 11 serving and had four digs and three kills.
Sophia Thurston also was perfect serving, going 9 for 9 with three aces, and had four kills and a dig.
Ryley Eldrige was 6 of 7 serving and had seven digs, while Chelsey Johnson contributed five kills and two digs and Shanya Nesbit had four kills and three digs.
Chimacum again needed only three sets against Coupeville as well, winning 25-19, 25-23, 25-22 on Thursday.
Thurston, Carthum, Thacker and Eldridge led the Cowboys’ serving.
Thacker was 10 for 10, Carthum went 13 of 14 with three aces, Thurston was 14 for 16 with four aces and Eldridge went 11 for 13 with an ace.
Carthum added 12 assists and three digs, Thacker contributed five digs and two blocks, Thurston had eight digs and six kills and Eldridge finished with eight digs.
Nesbit had seven kills and a block and Preson added six digs.
Chimacum hosts Neah Bay on Monday.
Girls Swimming
Port Angeles 103, North Kitsap 80
POULSBO — The Roughriders improved three previous state-qualifying times in an Olympic League win over the Vikings.
“Perhaps the most impressive stat is the fact that the swim team swam 32 events and posted five state times and 22 district times,” coach Rich Butler said.
“Only five events fell short of postseason recognition.”
The Port Angeles 200 medley relay team of Taylor Beebe, Carter Juskevich, Jaine Macias and Lum Fu won its event and improved its state-qualifying time with a mark of 1 minute, 56.56 seconds.
Macias improved her state time in the 100 butterfly, winning the event in 1:01.18. She also won the 100 breaststroke (1:12.89).
Juskevich claimed the 500 freestyle (5:33.71) while improving her state mark. She also won the 200 free with a time of 2:03.89.
Sierra Hunter won the 200 individual medley (2:27.79).
Port Angeles’ 200 free relay team, comprised of Beebe, Fu, Macias and Juskevich, also finished first (1:51.34).
The Riders placed first in eight of the 12 events and Poutscored North Kitsap in eight of 12 events.
Port Angeles will recognize its senior class Thursday with a 3:30 p.m. meet against Klahowya at William Shore Memorial Pool.
