PREP SPORTS: Port Angeles girls soccer team wraps regular season with overtime loss, hosts playoff game tonight; other area reports

BELFAIR — The Port Angeles girls soccer team closed out the regular season with a 3-2 overtime loss to North Mason.

Fortunately for the Roughriders, Tuesday’s game wasn’t a must-win because they wrapped up third place in the Olympic League when North Mason lost to Kingston 1-0 on Monday.

Port Angeles (6-6, 8-7) will host the fourth-place Bulldogs (5-7, 7-8) in a league tournament game for district seeding at Civic Field tonight at 6:45 p.m.

The winner of tonight’s game plays at second-place Olympic (10-2, 12-3) on Saturday. The winner of that game then plays at league champion North Kitsap (12-0, 13-1-1) on Tuesday.

The loser of tonight’s game moves onto a pigtail game next Tuesday against the fifth-place team from the South Puget Sound League — the winner advances to districts and the loser is eliminated.

Port Angeles started slow in Tuesday’s loss to the Bulldogs, giving up an early goal that forced the Riders to chase the game to draw level.

Freshman Emily Boyd stepped up and nearly single-handedly led Port Angeles to the win

First, Boyd scored on an 20-yard left-footed blast off an Emma Moseley assist in the 47th minute.

After North Mason’s second goal put them up 2-1, Boyd headed in a corner kick from Madison St. George.

“Emily had a great game in her first extended chance at forward,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said.

“We moved her up from her usual defensive midfielder role to get more offense, and she was awesome.”

North Mason’s Teagan Daviscourt, one of the league’s top scorers who was held in check much of the game by the Port Angeles defense, ended the match with a goal.

“It was only fitting that North Mason’s Teagan Daviscourt ended the game,” Scott Moseley said.

Port Townsend 1, Coupeville 0

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redhawks pulled off an Olympic League 1A win on senior night, despite finding out just hours before kickoff that they would be without three key starters.

“All looked lost, but it seems this team doesn’t know how to quit,” Port Townsend coach Colin Foden said following Tuesday’s game.

After weathering the pressure from Coupeville, into the wind, for the first half, Foden said the Redhawks dominated most of the second half.

Chloe Dawson who controlled the ball and sent a pass through for Kaitlyn Meek, who outpaced the defense for a goal in the 51st minute.

“A well deserved goal after Kaitlyn had terrorized the opposing defense with her speed,” Foden said.

The win moved Port Townsend up to second place in the Olympic League’s 1A Division.

“The team played heroically and the defense was superb,” Foden said.

“McKinzie Ginther was outstanding as sweeper and was supported brilliantly by Shenoa Snyder, Rrutenna Ramires, Emily Franklin, Rosemary D’Andrea and Bethany Lynch.

“Hannah Marx put in her best game so far and all 12 players got their playing time. An excellent win.

“It was senior night and we were able to say a fond farewell to Malia Henderson and Laura Garcia.

“Malia Henderson has been an exceptional leader and goalkeeper for all four years of high school.”

The Redhawks (2-3, 3-10) finish their regular season schedule at Coupeville (2-3, 5-6) tonight in a battle for second place in the division.

Both teams will begin the West Central District tournament next Tuesday.

Volleyball

North Mason 3, Port Angeles 0

BELFAIR — The Roughriders ended their season with a three-set loss to the Bulldogs 25-20, 27-25, 25-19.

Kiana Robideau had seven kills and one block for Port Angeles and Nizhoni wheeler contributed four kills and three blocks.

Elizabeth deFrang had five kills and nine digs; Dawn Oliver had 15 digs, four aces and 19 assists; and Alyssa Wetzler had 18 digs, one ace and two kills.

“The girls played absolutely great in moments tonight,” Port Angeles coach Christine Halberg said after Tuesday’s match.

“Kiana and Nizhoni hit some quick sets by Dawn that went straight down — probably the best of the season.

“We just couldn’t sustain our consistency. We were up 13-3 in game two and lost in OT.

“We beat ourselves with unforced errors and ball handling mistakes.

“It seems like when we decided to pour it on, it was just a little late. They never gave up, just didn’t quite have enough of something.”

The Riders finished the season 2-10 in league play and 2-12 overall.
