PREP SPORTS: Forks earns Evergreen League wrestling crown with three big wins; other area reports

ABERDEEN — Forks locked down the Evergreen League dual meet championship with a trio of dominant wins against Eatonville, Tenino and Aberdeen over a two-day period at Aberdeen High School.

Forks has not lost a league dual match in the past three seasons, and only lost one match each year the prior two seasons.

The Spartans sealed their title with a 55-16 win over Aberdeen on Wednesday.

Javier Contreras won the 145-pound match with a pin, and Tristan Tumaua did like wise in the heavyweight class.

The two were the only Forks wrestlers to win by pin.

At 182 pounds, Jack Dahlgren won by technical fall, and Sebastian Morales won by major decision 20-7 at 126 pounds.

Tristen Williams (113 pounds), Alvaro Ortiz (120) and Kenny Gale (160) all won by decision.

Forks’ 132-pounder Alan Ensastegui lost by major decision 11-1 to Erick Juarez.

The Spartans also won a pair of matches Tuesday against Eatonville and Tenino.

These matches were originally scheduled for Jan. 7, but were postponed due to the flooding in the Aberdeen and Hoquiam earlier this month.

Take down Cruisers

Forks defeated Eatonville 50-17.

Garrison Schumack won with a pin 57 seconds into the 138-pound match.

Joel Mohn won by pin at 1 minute and 2 second at 152 pounds, and Tumaua won the heavyweight match with a pin at the 1:30 mark.

Morales and Gale also won by pin. As did Jack Dahlgren, who moved up from 182 pounds to 195 pounds.

Forks’ normal 195-pounder, Dimitri Sampson, dislocated his elbow at the Gut Check Invite earlier this month and Spartans coach Bob Wheeler said it is unknown whether Sampson will be able to return to action this season.

Morales out

Forks also was with out Miguel Morales, who has placed in the top three at state two straight years. Morales is out with an infection.

Wheeler hopes he will return for this week’s Dream Duals in Spokane.

Ortiz also won for the Spartans against the Cruisers, taking a 13-3 major decision in the 120-pound match.

Forks defeated Tenino 72-6 in a match that consisted mostly of forfeits.

Wheeler said the Spartans, who placed second at state last year and should be contenders at next month’s Mat Classic, are showing improvement but are hampered by injuries.

“The wrestlers are working into postseason form, but we still have not put our complete team on the mat for any competition,” Wheeler said.

“The real test will be this coming Saturday at the Dream Duals in Spokane. However, we still may not have our complete team.”

COUPEVILLE — The Wolves had no answer inside for the Cowboys’ size, with Chimacum post Brendon Naylor pouring in 31 points and Orion Weller adding 12.

“We started off hot,” Cowboys coach Jim Eldridge said.

“We’ve been starting slow lately, but we jumped on them early, and our big guys dominated.”

Myles Hundley came off the bench to hit two early 3-pointers on his way to 12 points.

“He’s starting to find his shot a little bit,” Eldridge said.

Chimacum led by as many as 23 in the first half, but a slow second quarter allowed Coupeville to chip the score

“Coupeville aren’t great basketball players but they are athletic, and we made a few turnovers here and there,” Eldridge said.

The Cowboys picked up their play after halftime with a dominant, 27-point third period.

“Our kids really played some of their best ball of the season,” Eldridge said.

Chimacum (3-0, 4-8) hosts Klahowya (2-1, 3-10) tonight with the early lead in the Olympic League’s Class 1A Division on the line.
