PREP ROUNDUP: PA girls drop game to Peninsula High School

Sequim girls improve to 6-0 on the season

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls basketball team got off to a rough start against 3A Peninsula, falling in a deep hole in the first half in a 50-37 loss Saturday.

The Roughriders did better in the second half, outscoring the Seahawks 22-18 in the final 16 minutes. Peninsula came in to the game with a 6-1 record.

“The [17]-point first-half deficit [32-15] was due largely to Peninsula’s excellent outside shooting and our inability to convert inside scoring opportunities,” said coach Michael Poindexter.

“In the second half, we came out much stronger, working very hard defensively, and attacking the basket with more confidence, with effective drives from Teanna Clark and Piper Williams,” Poindexter said.

“On the defensive end, Teanna and Piper did an excellent job of defending the Seahawks’ top two scorers in the second half — Kaylia Heidelberg had just four of her game-high 23 points in the second half, and Grace Richardson was held to 27 percent shooting in the second-half.”

Poindexter said Lexie Smith did an incredible job rebounding with 16 boards to go with her 11 points. Williams added eight boards. Clark had nine points.

“We are 3-4 and play [at] Lynden and Sehome on Dec. 27 and Dec. 28. We are hoping that our tough non-league schedule in December will help prepare us for return to league play in January,” Poindexter said.

Sequim won by 13 points despite not making a single 3-pointer all game.

“We had a tough game today. We didn’t play our best game, but the girls played very good defense. Jolene [Vaara] led the way in points, but Hannah [Bates], Taryn [Johnson] and Bobbi [Mixon] did a great job handling their full-court press,” said coach Joclin Julmist.

Boys basketball

Crescent 46, Lake Quinault 23

AMANDA PARK — The Crescent boys basketball team used a 25-5 run in the second and third quarters to beat Lake Quinault on the road 46-23 on Saturday, improving the Loggers’ record to 6-1.

“We got off to a slow start. Had a little bit of bus legs. Plus we got to the gym way too early, that’s on the coach. We really emphasized defense and rebounding, and once we got our legs under us, we did a terrific job on defense,” said coach Chris Ferrier.

Lake Quinault only had 14 points halfway through the fourth quarter.

“Their shooter Luke Anderson had 19 last week against us and this week had one free throw. We can chalk that up to really good team defense. It was a very intelligently played game by our guys,” Ferrier said.

Dom Sprague led the Loggers with 17, while Conner Ferro-May had eight points and eight rebounds. Conner Bauers had five assists.

Crescent plays at Shoreline Christian today.

The Roughriders will resume competition after the winter break.
