GIRLS BASKETBALL: Port Angeles picks up two wins in one night

Riders beat Olympic twice in same evening

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles had the fortune of picking up two victories in one night Friday at home against Olympic.

The Roughriders held back the Trojans 39-28 in a Dec. 13 game suspended due to a water leak at the Olympic gym and held off Olympic’s upset attempt with defensive effort in a 41-36 win.

“Olympic got out to a first-quarter lead by hitting three 3-point shots against our zone. We shifted to a full-court man-man defense, which helped us to force 24 Trojan turnovers and do a better job of challenging their outside shooters,” coach Michael Poindexter said.

Port Angeles trailed 23-17 at half, but came out hot.

“Our starting group played an outstanding game of defense, probably our best press defense of the year. An 11-0 run to start the second half ultimately was the decisive segment of the game,” Poindexter said.

Lindsay Smith led all scorers with 22 points and added nine rebounds and four steals. Older sister Lexie Smith had 14 points, nine rebounds, five steals and three assists.

“Lexie and Lindsay Smith both had solid scoring and rebounding nights,” Poindexter said. “Becca Manson rebounded well and took outstanding care of the ball, playing most of the game and having no turnovers. Morgan Politika and Teanna Clark did an effective job of defending Olympic’s outside shooters over the last three quarters.”

Port Angeles (7-3) visits North Kitsap on Tuesday.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders held down the Trojans from the free-throw line to wrap up a Dec. 13 contest suspended due to a water leak at the Olympic gym.

With Port Angeles ahead 32-23 with 3:35 left in the third quarter, the contest was suspended due to an air vent in the gymnasium leaking water onto the floor.

“Our fourth quarter lead caused Olympic to foul quite a bit late,” Poindexter said. “Our 4-for-6 free-throw shooting in the closing minutes helped seal the victory.”
