SEATTLE — The national champion Western Washington University women’s soccer team will be recognized today at the 88th annual Seattle Sports Star of the Year Awards held at The Westin in Seattle.
Attending the event will be goalkeeper Claire Henninger, who was also a goalkeeper for the Sequim High School girls’ team. Several other teammates and coach Travis Connell will attend.
With Henninger starting in goal, WWU won the NCAA Division II championship with a 2-1 victory in the title game against West Chester of Pennsylvania on Dec. 3. The game was held in Seattle.
Henninger was featured in a Seattle Times article on the awards ceremony.
“Sometimes, I’ll just be walking around campus and I’ll remember, ‘Oh, we won the natty. That was cool.’ I’ll just smile and keep walking,” Henninger said in an interview with the Times. “I’m just so grateful for all my teammates and coaches that we got to experience that together.”
The WWU women will be honored as one of five nominees for the women’s Sports Star of the Year award. The other nominees are Rose Lavelle, star midfielder for the OL Reign, Olympic champion canoeist Havin Harrison, UW softball All-American Baylee Lingler and Seattle Storm star Jewell Loyd.
Also in attendance Tuesday will be Ken Griffey Jr., who will receive the 2023 Royal Brougham Sports Legend Award.
Tour de Dungeness
SEQUIM — Bicycle racing returns to the Olympic Peninsula with the annual “Tour de Dungeness” race on Saturday, March 11.
Riders in different categories will compete on a 12-mile course that includes Lotzgesell, Cays, East Anderson, Sequim Dungeness Way, Woodcock and Kitchen-Dick roads.
The race begins at 9:45 a.m. and will run until late afternoon. The race will be held rain or shine and about 400 to 450 riders are expected from all across Washington.
If motorists are driving in the Dungeness Valley area on March 11, they are advised to be aware that there will likely be some minor traffic delays and to use caution around the cyclists.
