AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Area 6 closing to chinook retention; summer soccer camps; fishing derby reels them in

Marine Area 6 closing to king retention Monday

PORT ANGELES — The state Department of Fish and Wildlife has elected to close Marine Area 6 (East Strait of Juan de Fuca) to salmon fishing starting Monday.

Fish managers say that fishery projections, based on dockside sampling, indicate Marine Area 6 will exceed the allowable limit of total chinook encounters — including both retained and released fish — prior to the planned April 15 closure date.

The fishery is being closed to control impacts on stocks of concern and ensure compliance with conservation objectives.

Hatchery chinook season is scheduled to remain open until Sunday, April 15 in neighboring Marine Area 9 (Admiralty Inlet) and until Monday, April 30 in Marine Area 5 (Sekiu) and Hood Canal (Marine Area 12) also is planned to remain open until April 30.

Summer soccer camps

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Youth Soccer Club is accepting registrations for its summer camps held at Peninsula College.

Camps will run from Monday through Friday, June 25-29 and July 23-27.

Sessions for U8 and U9 players with birth years of 2009 and 2010 will run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Cost for these sessions is $35.

Those in the U10-U16 age range with birth years of 2002-2008 will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cost for the older players is $100.
