PORT TOWNSEND — She finds a nice spot along the water or the mountains and paints “loose” watercolor sketches of the landscape.
Then, Meg Kaczyk’s work takes an unexpected turn.
Kaczyk generously applies swirls and drips of liquid acrylic atop the sketch to bring exclamations to the color and form.
“I like to take the initial sketch beyond the realm of realism, to capture the feeling, the motion and the heart of a scene,” she said.
Kaczyk expressionistic painting will be among the attractions at Port Townsend’s Gallery Walk from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
Her work and Michael Kenney’s ancient jewelry will be on display at Gallery 9, 1012 Water St., from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Kenney, a founding member of Gallery 9, often uses rare and unusual materials with ancient origins in his designs. His fine jewelry, featured during August, includes fossil ammonite shells and agatized dinosaur bone.
The stones herald a time and place 66 million years ago, calling to mind the creatures that once roamed the ancient world on land and in the sea.

Other venues for art walk attractions are:
• Port Townsend Gallery, 715 Water St., will display JoAnn Raines’ watercolor paintings and Anne Schneider’s mixed media collage papers from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Raines, a longtime artist, felt an “inner watercolor painter” ready to unleash on the medium.
So, she began taking classes and attending workshops. Now, she paints using an impressionistic style to reflect anything from still-life to people in everyday scenes. When she’s not painting or sketching “en plein air,” Raines totes a camera to collect impromptu images that capture her interest. Later, she’ll reference those photographs in her paintings.
Schneider creates collage papers with acrylic paints, stencils, masks, lines, stamps and textures — plus lots of layers. She employs whimsical qualities and dynamic movement to tell a story. Yet the story remains up for interpretation.

• Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St., will display artist of the month Brian Goodman’s photography, exploring the interplay between light, color and texture.
“Ever since I can remember, I have loved looking at photographs,” Goodman said. “Whether in books or magazines — Life, National Geographic and Geo were some of my favorites — I would spend hours poring over them.”
Goodman will talk about his current collection, “Solace of Space,” from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, at the center.
Also on display for August, “Expressions Northwest” features 65 pieces by Northwest artists, including several from the North Olympic Peninsula. It’s on display now until Aug. 27.
Today, an awards ceremony and reception will be held at 5:30 p.m.

• Jefferson Museum of Art &History, 540 Water St., will display two collections during the art walk from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
“Pat and Peter Simpson: Collectors and Patrons” features art collected in the 1970s and 1980s. It will be paired with recent works by the same artists and “Cabinet of Curiosities,” a Victorian-like exhibit of rare, weird and creepy artifacts.
