Jazz on the Lawn to spice up Monday evening

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble will present the eighth annual Jazz on the Lawn concert at noon Monday.

The free concert will be on the terraced lawn just east of Keegan Hall on Peninsula College’s Port Angeles campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

It marks the 95th performance by the band since its founding in September 2008.

The outdoor venue offers a non-smoking, alcohol-free, informal environment in which to hear “America’s Classical Music.”

The PC Jazz Ensemble features Robbin Eaves on vocals with a 14-piece jazz band. Eaves will sing some standards from the repertoire of Frank Sinatra (“Summer Wind”), Ella Fitzgerald (“Goody, Goody”) and Etta Jones (“Don’t Go to Strangers”).

Also appearing as a featured vocalist will be Olga Palenga, a relatively new member of the band who is usually heard on piano and clarinet. Olga will sing “Autumn Leaves” and “Moonlight Serenade.”

The group will welcome special guest, Ed Donohue on trumpet and flugelhorn. Donohue is director of bands at Port Angeles’ Stevens Middle School and a renowned jazz soloist in the Pacific Northwest.

The band will perform music by Dizzy Gillespie, Mongo Santamaria, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson, Freddie Redd, Al Jolson, Spyro Gyra and David P. Jones, the conductor of the PC Jazz Ensemble.

Performers in the band come from Port Angeles, Sequim, Joyce, Forks, Quilcene and Port Townsend.

The Port Angeles contingent consists of Bob Bailey (alto sax), Andy Geiger (also/tenor sax), Donohue (trumpet), WesLee Laughman (trumpet), Clare Wegener (euphonium), Palenga (piano/clarinet), Tor Brandes (drums) and David Jones (director and keyboards).

From Sequim are Abby Hansted (tenor sax) and Hannah Patterson (trombone). Gerardo Reyes (euphonium) is from Forks.

John Adams (alto sax, soprano sax and clarinet) and Lorenzo Jones (baritone sax) reside in Port Townsend, John Sanders (bass) hails from Quilcene and primary singer Eaves lives in Joyce.

Guests are invited to bring a blanket or lawn chair for seating and a sack lunch if desired. The Bookaneer Market &Deli, located in the Pirate Union Building (PUB), will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will offer lunch items.

For inclement weather, the alternate venue is inside the PUB on the PC campus.
