Chautauqua returns to Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — The New Old Time Chautauqua will return to Port Townsend today through Sunday, just in time for the 89th Rhody Festival.

Various venues throughout town will host the Big Show, a post bed-race dance party, Olympic Peninsula indigenous storytellers, artists, culture carriers, Maker’s Market and free educational workshops.

The Chautauqua kicks off with Chemakum Story and History Telling at 6 tonight in the Carnegie Room at the Port Townsend Public Library, 1220 Lawrence St.

The Big Show will be at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Hall, 209 Monroe St.

It will feature the Flying Karamazov Brothers, Artis the Spoonman, the spectacular magician Tobias Weinberger, Hula-hooping superstar Vanessa Vortex, fabled clown Faeble Kievman, the Whistling Wizard Jason Victor Serinus, cellist and musical genius Christie Gunn, writer and raconteur Alex Stein, musician, songwriter and playwright Amy Englehahrdt, acrobatic artists Shawn and Sadie and the 8-foot-tall red-nosed man of wonder Godfrey Daniels.

Tickets for the Big Show are $30 per person and can be purchased at https://theproductionalliance.square.site; as can tickets for the Unexpected Brass Band’s Dance Party Extravaganza Friday evening, right after the Rhody Festival’s bed races.

Olympic Peninsula indigenous storytellers, artists and culture carriers from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at various venues downtown include Harvest Moon, Quinault Indian Nation; Maria Pascua, Makah Tribe; Mark Charles, Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe; Rosalee Walz, Chemakum Tribe; and Vivian Lee, Hoh Tribe.

• Chemakum Story and History Telling, 6 p.m. in the Carnegie Reading Room at the Port Townsend Public Library

Wednesday:

• Hula-hooping and Object Manipulation Playshop, 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Pope Marine Park

• Trike races registration, 5 p.m. at city hall

• Trike races start at 6 p.m. on Water Street, form Madison Street to Monroe Street

• Narrative Rhythms: A Dance Workshop, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Port Townsend Athletic Club

• Grieving the Trees: Ritual and Art from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Kalma, 926 Water St.

Thursday:

• What’s Your Type? 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Type Townsend, 1007 Water St.

• Sentinel Rock and Camas Prairie Trail Tour, 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., meet at Sentinel Rock in the Golf Park

• Song of the Camas, 4:30 p.m. followed at 5 p.m. by bring your own Outdoor Dinner at Camas Prairie in the Golf Park

• Pet Parade registration, 4:30 p.m. at Van Buren and Lawrence streets.

• Parade starts at 5:30 pm on Lawrence Street from Van Buren Street to Taylor Street

• Nourishing Narratives: Stories of Food and Culture, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. indoors at the Golf Park

• My Story, Mystory, Mythstory 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. downtown Port Townsend

Friday:

• Repair It Workspace and Exhibit, noon to 3 p.m. in the Port Townsend Marine Science Center at the Flagship Landing Building

• Kiddie Parade registration, 3 p.m. at the library; parade starts at 4 p.m. on Lawrence Street from Fillmore Street to Chetzemoka Street.

• Hair and Beard Contest, 5 p.m. check-in and assembly at Water and Monroe streets; judging at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Hall.

• Bed Races 5:30 p.m.check-in and assembly at Water and Monroe streets; races begin at 6:30 on Water Street from Monroe Street to Madison Street.

• Juggler Meetup, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the gym at Port Townsend Recreation Center.

• Dance Party Extravaganza, 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the American Legion Hall

Saturday:

• Repair It Workspace and Exhibit, noon to 3 p.m. in the Port Townsend Marine Science Center at the Flagship Landing Building.

• Rhody Fest Grand Parade, 1 p.m., downtown Port Townsend

• Cake Picnic, 3 p.m. at Pope Marine Plaza

• Makers Market, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cotton Building

• Family Fun, Circus Arts, Educational and Cultural Workshops, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at multiple venues downtown including American Legion Hall, Pope Marine Park Community Building, Pope Marine Park, Brigid’s Loft and the Port Townsend Marine Science Center.

Family fun and circus arts events include Repair It, Sketch and Stroll, Cedar, Sock Puppets and Puppet Show Play, Musical Spoons. Recovery Community Circus Arts, Juggling and Ensemble Juggling, Hula Hoop, Making Your Own Cordage, Kumihimo, Song Swap, Yoga and Paper Crane Folding.
