SEQUIM — Jayson Brocklesby continued his offensive explosion and Sequim moved into a tie for first place in the Olympic League by beating Olympic 67-54 on Friday night.
Brocklesby scored 32 points, the third time in three weeks he has eclipsed 30 points. He also pulled down seven rebounds.
“He really focused on the hoop,” Wolves coach Greg Glasser said.
“He’s so quick and athletic. When he turns and faces you and the hoop, you’re in trouble.”
In the last month, the senior wing has scored at least 18 points in seven of Sequim’s last nine games. For the season, he is averaging 20.1 points.
“I’m just attacking the basket, getting the ball down the court and being strong with the ball,” Brocklesby said of his recent tear.
“I only have one move: going strong to the basket.”
Brocklesby shot 11 for 19 from the field. Most of his points did come off aggressive drives to the hoop, but he also made one 3-pointer and was 9 for 15 at the free-throw line.
By beating the Trojans, who came into the game ranked No. 9 in The Associated Press 2A poll and were previously undefeated in league play, Sequim avenged its only loss of the season in the state of Washington.
The teams now have identical 8-1 league and 10-3 overall records.
Despite Brocklesby’s impressive numbers, the Wolves’ victory was far from a one-man show.
“There were a lot of great performances out there,” Glasser said.
“It was probably the best team performance we’ve seen in a long time.”
Starting point guard Anthony Pinza was unfazed by Olympic’s constantly pressing defenses, finishing with just two turnovers.
Pinza also made 9 of 10 free throws, most of them in the fourth quarter, to finish with nine points, four assists and four steals.
Glasser said it might have been the best game he has seen Pinza play.
Sophomore Alex Barry made some big plays for the Wolves, too.
With less than 10 seconds to play in the first half, he stole the ball and quickly flipped it to Gabe Carter.
Carter missed his first shot, but got the rebound and scored on the second try to give the Wolves a 27-19 lead at halftime.
In the fourth quarter, Barry swished a long 3-pointer that beat the shot clock and gave Sequim a 10-point lead with 3 minutes left.
“Alex did a lot of great things for us [in the game],” Glasser said.
With Brocklesby shouldering most of the scoring load, Gabe Carter found other ways to contribute to the win.
He finished with 10 rebounds, seven points, seven assists, four steals and two blocks.
“There is not one aspect of the game [Carter] doesn’t help us out in,” Glasser said.
Defensively, the Wolves held Quentin Phillips, who came into the game leading the league with 20.1 points per game, to just 11 points.
Brian Tyson topped the Trojans with 20 points.
Sequim is off until Friday next week when it travels to Kingston (5-3, 7-5).
