SPORTS: Port Angeles girls basketball team rallies late to beat Port Townsend; other prep reports

PORT TOWNSEND — The Class 1A Port Townsend Redskins gave the 2A Port Angeles Roughriders a run for their money in their makeup Olympic League contest Monday night.

The Riders rallied in the fourth quarter for a 41-28 victory but it wasn’t for a lack of effort by the Redskins.

“I thought the Port Townsend kids played very, very well,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said.

“They played off their great win over Olympic [last weekend]. I thought they outplayed us for most of the game.”

For Port Townsend’s part, the Redskins were looking ahead to a crucial game against North Mason on Tuesday (results not available by press time).

“We mixed up our lineup and played everybody,” Port Townsend coach Randy Maag said.

“We modified our lineup and tried to hang in there while trying to save some energy for North Mason.”

A win against the 2A Bulldogs (0-12, 2-14) is crucial for the Redskins’ (4-10, 8-10) playoff plans.

The Riders (11-3, 12-5 in third place), meanwhile, had an important meeting with North Kitsap (8-4, 9-5 in fourth place) on Tuesday (results not available by press time).

The Riders led the Redskins just 14-9 at halftime and 29-23 at the end of three but a 12-5 fourth quarter put the game away.

“I was pleased with the way we closed out the game,” Poindexter said.

Kiah Jones finished with a game-high 15 points for the Riders while Codi Hallinan sank nine for the Redskins.

JOYCE — Derrick Findley led three players in double figures with 17 points to spark the Loggers to the nonleague victory Monday night.

Crescent rolled out to a 28-11 halftime lead and never looked back.

The Roughriders outscored the Loggers 29-27 in the second half but by then the damage had been done.

Kai Story and Joel Williams both had double-doubles for Crescent with Story scoring 16 and bringing down 10 rebounds while Williams added 11 points and 10 boards.

Gene Peppard grabbed seven rebounds as the Loggers dominated the inside.

“We were pretty good on the boards,” Crescent coach Darren Heaward said.

“It was a good battle and a good win for us. The boys are playing well together.”

The Loggers next play North Olympic League powerhouse Neah Bay on Friday night.

PUYALLUP — The Nisqually League-leading Cougars used their size to control the Cowboys this time around.

Chimacum won the first meeting at home earlier in the year when the Cowboys shot the ball better but 6-foot-10 Shawn Spencer and two 6-4 forwards were too much the second time around.

“We played pretty good in the first half but the third quarter really hurt us,” coach Jim Eldridge said.

The Cougars led 32-24 at the break but a 19-5 third-period advantage blew the game open.

Jake Akers, one of the Cougars’ 6-4 players, drilled in a game-high 21 points while Spencer added 12.

Quinn Eldridge led the Cowboys with 19 points while Rafael Pagasian was the next best scorer with seven.

Cascade Christian, tied for first with Seattle Christian going into the game, improved to 8-1 in league and 14-4 overall while the Cowboys fell to 4-5, 10-7, fourth in league.

Chimacum, still in good shape for the playoffs, next hosts Orting (0-8, 0-15) on Wednesday night.

ONALASKA — The Loggers took sole possession of first place in the SWL-Evergreen Division with the win Monday night.

“We came out and played really well in the first half but we couldn’t keep it up in the second half,” coach Scott Justus said.

Justus also said that he didn’t want to complain about the officiating but that the Loggers had only four fouls called against them the whole night while the Spartans had 17 fouls.

“That doesn’t seem right,” he said.

The Spartans made three of their four free throws while the Loggers made 10 of 16.

The Loggers sit in first place at 9-2, 11-6 overall, while the Spartans are alone in second at 8-3, 12-5.

The two teams split on the year with the Spartans winning by 15 in Forks.

Braden Decker led the Spartans with 10 points

Steven Nedved led three Loggers in double figures with 19 points.

The Spartans have three more games to play in the regular season starting with Rochester at Forks on tonight.
