SPORTS: Port Angeles finishes second to Kingston in cross country; other prep reports

PORT ANGELES — Kyle Tupper of Port Angeles and Annie Roberts of Kingston won the marquee races at a three-way Olympic League cross country meet at Lincoln Park.

Kingston, a league hotbed for cross country the past few years, captured both the boys and girls varsity team titles and also took the top 10 places in the boys JV competition.

Middle school races were held alongside the high school competition with Sequim and Port Townsend’s Blue Heron schools participating along with Stevens of Port Angeles.

Tupper claimed first place in the boys race with a time of 16 minutes, 5 seconds in the 5-kilometer run Wednesday.

Port Townsend’s Xavier Frank came in third place with a 16:40 time but Kingston took four of the top six places to win with 24 points as the Roughriders were second with 31.

The Redskins had an incomplete team with only two runners.

The Buccaneers’ Devon Jacob was runner-up in 16:28, while teammates Lucas Thompson, Anthony Woelke and John Griffin were fourth through sixth, respectively.

The Riders, however, claimed the next four places with Evan Herbert, Tony Dalgardno, Peter Butler and Simon Shindler coming in seventh through 10th.

Showing its power in boys competition, the Buccaneers took the top 10 places in the JV race with Port Angeles and Port Townsend sporting incomplete teams.

The Riders had four JV runners while the Redskins had just one.

Kingston won the race with a perfect score of 15.

Kingston’s Roberts family, which has dominated league girls cross country competition in recent years, had another family member, Annie, win girls varsity in atime of 19:45 for the 5K course.

Port Townsend’s Brittany Grant captured second in 20:01 while Elizabeth Stevenson of Port Angeles claimed third in 20:11.

Kingston had its five runners finish in the top 14 to win the team title with 28 while the Riders were second with 39 and the Redskins third with 64.

Port Angeles runners Jolene Millsap and Annika Pederson took sixth and seventh place, respectively, while Port Townsend’s Peri Muellner came in ninth.

The Riders also had Taylor Jones, Dusti Lucas and Willow Suess take 11th through 13th, respectively.

There was no girls JV race.

Blue Heron and Sequim won the middle school titles with the Port Townsend school taking first in the boys race with 27 points, just nudging Stevens with 29.

Sequim had an incomplete team with only two runners but one, Hayden Crane, won the 2,400-meter race in 10:09.

August O’Shea of Sequim claimed fifth place in 10:24.

Blue Heron took second and third with Tristan Fountain (10:15) the runner-up and Dashiel Morley (10:16) the third-place finisher.

Stevens stayed close to Blue Heron in scoring by capturing sixth through eighth with Cody Anderson sixth, Nicolas Hubbard seventh and Max Hornack eighth.

Sequim dominated the girls middle school race with 22 points while Stevens was second with 35.

Blue Heron wasn’t available for team honors because the school had only four runners, just short of the required five.

Erin Vig led Sequim by taking first place in a time of 10:33 for the 2,400-meter race while teammates Elizabeth Rosales (10:58) took third and Noelle Bittner (11:12) was fifth.
