Lefties hosting youth workouts all month long
PORT ANGELES — Youth baseball workouts hosted by coaches and players from the Port Angeles Lefties and the Puget Sound Collegiate League will be held this month in Port Angeles.
Workouts begin today at Wally Sigmar Field on the Peninsula College campus.
The sessions are $10 apiece. They will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. each Wednesday in February and 10:30 a.m. to noon each Saturday in February.

Avalanche Black wins
SEASIDE — Nextdoor Gastro Pub’s Olympic Avalanche Black eighth-grade girls basketball team swept through competition to win the Seaside Classic to win the 15th title in team history.
The Avalanche Black defeated four feeder teams for Class 6A Oregon high schools, the largest classification in Oregon.
The Port Angeles-based AAU team defeated St. Mary’s Academy 46-29 led by Madison Cooke’s 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Avalanche Black then edged the McNary Celtics 29-26 with Jaida Wood scoring 13 points, grabbing seven rebounds and blocking two shots.
Myra Walker added 16 rebounds.
A 38-32 win over Canby was sparked by Millie Long’s 13 points, four rebounds and three assists.
The Avalanche Black doubled up Westview 40-20 in the title game.
“The full-court pressure provided by Camille Stensgard and Millie Long was more than Westview could handle,” Avalanche Black coach Joe Marvelle said.
“Those two girls were just relentless within our press on defense. Millie had an incredible game and led us with 15 points. Camille probably had her best day as an Avalanche player with 13 points while playing lights out on defense.”
The Avalanche Black played the tournament without leading scorer Hannah Reetz.
“This championship was a total team effort the entire weekend and I’m very proud of these girls,” Marvelle said.
Youth hoops on tap
PORT ANGELES — The Presidents’ Day Classic, a youth basketball tournament with divisions for boys and girls teams from fourth through eighth grade, will be held Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 18-19.
The tournament is hosted by the Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Department and presented by Red Lion Hotel.
The tournament has a four-game guarantee and a $250 entry fee per team.
