Thompson digs deep, Wolves drop tennis match to Bainbridge

SEQUIM — A Sequim boys soccer lineup made up of mostly younger junior varsity players was up to the task despite the final score, falling 2-0 to Bremerton at home Thursday.

“We were missing seven players and had to swing up from JV,” assistant coach Dave Breckenridge said.

“[Bremerton’s] game was figured out immediately by the boys. They just booted it forward with hopes that their strikers could connect. Fortunately, most the time we were able to defend well. The unfortunate part was the two penalty calls that ended as goals. Those were basically the only true shots on goal as well. We had opportunities to put it in the net and just couldn’t make it happen. [I’m] very proud of the team for coming together with so many pieces missing and connecting multiple passes to advance up the field. At one point we played with 10 due to fatigue and pulled muscles. And still held them to the scoreline.”

Breckrenridge said swing player John Pehrson had a standout varsity debut for the Wolves, rising to the occaision and playing an amazing game.

“Not only did he hold it down in defense, but made multiple runs and through ball passes to create chances for our strikers,” Breckinridge said.

“This being John’s first varsity appearance he truly earned the respect of his fellow teammates. It’s always exciting when you see these young freshman players doing amazing things on the big stage.”

Sequim (1-4-0) is off for spring break and visit Kingston on April 11.
