PREP ROUNDUP: Vikings claim softball championship from Riders

POULSBO — Port Angeles’ four-season reign as Olympic League softball champions came to an end against new league champs North Kitsap in a 3-1 loss to the Vikings on Monday.

The Roughriders were unable to break through against North Kitsap freshman pitcher Makayla Stockman, who struck out nine and limited Port Angeles to six hits.

Alicia Goetz drew a walk to open the game for the Vikings and Samantha Burgh reached on an error. Both runners moved up to second and third on a wild pitch and a walk drawn by Lamara Villiard loaded the bases. Iyreland Lawson then drove in the first run of the game with a single.

The next batter, Brianna Hoffman, sent a hard grounder to second where Port Angeles’ Hope O’Connor tried to tag Villiard as she ran by, but in the process the ball fell out of her glove. By the time she recovered, Hoffman was safe at first and a second run scored.

Port Angeles stranded two runners in scoring position in the second with a strikeout to end the inning and left O’Connor hanging after her leadoff double in the third.

Ava Brenkman doubled home the Riders’ lone run in the sixth. But with the bases loaded Zoe Smithson popped out to short.

Port Angeles put runners on second and third with one out after a walk and a double. But Stockman picked up a strikeout and a ground out to end the Riders’ run at the top.

Third-place Port Angeles (5-3, 7-6) visits fifth-place North Mason (4-5, 6-8) today.

BREMERTON — Bobbi Sparks hit the go-ahead solo home run in the top of the seventh and came up clutch defensively to lift the Wolves to a huge win over the Trojans.

“With two outs senior Bobbi Sparks hit the first pitch over the left-field fence to give [us] the lead,” Sequim coach Tim Lusk said. “Olympic loaded the bases with three consecutive infield errors and only one out.”

Lusk said catcher Raelyn Opdyke made a great play to catch a foul pop for the second out.

“Bobbi Sparks came up with a game-saving play on a shot up the middle, coming up with the ball and stepping on second for the last out,” Lusk said.

The Wolves’ offense went back-and-forth with Olympic’s powerful attack all game long.

Sequim had 15 hits with Sparks and Isabelle Dennis leading the way with three hits apiece.

Jayla Julmist hit a two-run homer and a single and Kiana Robideau and LeeAnn Raney each added two hits for the Wolves.

Dennis pitched the first four innings, with Raney going the final three in relief.

Second-place Sequim (7-3, 9-4) visits North Kitsap (10-1, 12-3) today.

BREMERTON — Johnnie Young tossed a complete-game on the mound and drove in two runs at the plate as the Wolves sealed up the Olympic League’s third playoff seed in a win Monday.

Young scattered six hits and a walk while striking out five in his seven innings of work.

He threw strikes on 63 of his 86 pitches (73.2 percent).

The Wolves were aggressive on offense from the start, scoring on Joey Oliver’s steal of home in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead.

Olympic scored two in their half of the second and the score stayed 2-1 Trojans until the sixth.

Silas Thomas reached base to open the inning on a hard ground ball hit right at the Olympic pitcher.

A two-base error on Hayden Eaton’s fly ball to center put runners in scoring position for Sequim. An out later, Brandon Barnett singled to center to tie the game. Another single, this time by Austin Newton drove in Eaton with the eventual winning run.

Two batters later and after a Trojans’ pitching change, Young lined a two-run single to right field for a 5-2 advantage.

Sequim (7-5, 12-7) won its final three league games to climb into third. The Wolves will begin the district playoffs against the South Puget Sound League’s No. 6 seed. That game will be held at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma at 2 p.m. Saturday.
