PREP ROUNDUP: Port Angeles soccer facing must-win game; Quilcene baseball advances in playoffs

TACOMA — With a 2-1 loss in penalty kicks to Franklin Pierce in a Class 2A West Central District III Tournament match, Port Angeles boys soccer now has its collective back against the wall, facing a must-win contest to qualify for the state tournament.

Franklin Pierce beat the Riders 3-1 in PKs Tuesday night, setting up a loser out match against Washington at 5 p.m. today at Franklin Pierce High School. Sequim beat Washington 4-2 on Tuesday. If the Riders win tonight’s match, they’ll play against Renton or Highline on Saturday for the fifth or sixth seeds to state.

The match was 0-0 at the half with the Roughriders’ best chance of the half coming on a shot by Stuart Methner that missed just wide of the goalpost.

“[We] stepped up [our] game in the second half. Strong tackles from Gabe Long set the tone and Port Angeles started to put some pressure on the Cardinals,” said coach Chris Saari.

The Riders scored in the 46th minute to take a lead on a hustle play by Andrew Methner. Gabe Long played the ball in over the Cardinals and Methner put the ball into an empty net after it bounced off the Franklin Pierce goalkeeper.

The Roughriders were a mere six minutes away from victory when the Cardinals scored in the 74th minute when Franklin Pierce midfielder Luis Herrera got the ball past keeper Anton Kathol.

That goal led to overtime and then to penalty kicks. Regulation play ended with Port Angeles having 13 shots to Franklin Pierce’s 17.

“It was a heartbreaking loss for PA after being 6 minutes away from a berth to state,” Saari said.

The Riders go into tonight’s match with an overall record of 12-4, while Washington is 13-4-3.

Saari said defender Hollund Bailey played a great game defensively with his clearances and headers. He also said midfielder Andrew St. George worked hard and showed a lot of creativity in the midfield and that forward Luis Galvan sparked the Roughriders offense.

“Luis Galvan was electric with the ball at his feet,” Saari said.

Saari named Andrew Methner his offensive player of the match, Hollund his defensive player of the match and Galvan, Long and St. George his transition players of the match.

Baseball Quilcene 17, Mary M. Knight 10

PARKLAND — The Rangers blew a 7-2 lead, but then got stellar pitching from second-year hurler Chase Newman to shut down the Owls to remain alive in the Class 1B Bi-District Tournament.

It was Quilcene’s fifth win in a row. The Rangers gave up seven runs to Mary M. Knight in the fourth inning to fall behind 9-7, but they rallied with six runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to take control of the game.

“We were able to push their most experienced pitcher off the mound. Then the wheels fell off for them,” said coach Darrin Dotson.

Meanwhile, Newman came in to pitch in the fifth, going the rest of the way. He faced 12 batters, striking out four and allowing just one hit and one run, Dotson said.

The Rangers struggled with walks until Newman came in.

“My pitchers just couldn’t find the zone. We ere battling the [strike] zone all day,” Dotson said. He said Newman did a good job mixing up his fastball with a cutter and catching four Owl’s batters looking for strikeouts.

At the plate, Dustin Hughes had three hits, two walks and scored three runs, Olin Reynolds had two hits and two walks and Robert Comstock III had two hits and a double.

Quilcene is now in the double-elimination part of the tournament. The Rangers (6-5, 7-8) now play the Sea-Tac 1B champion Evergreen Lutheran (12-2, 12-2) at 4 p.m. today at the Sprinker Recreation Center. Win, the Rangers are off to state. If they lose, they still have a chance for state by beating either Tacoma Baptist or Concordia Christian.

TACOMA — The Cowboys had a heartbreaking loss in their West Central District III 1A Tournament opener, getting buried by the Warriors 12-run seventh inning.

The Cowboys entered the seventh inning tied 8-8, and got two quick outs against Seattle Christian in the seventh, but then could not stop the bleeding as the Warriors scored 12 runs, nine of them unearned, with two outs.

Chimacum is still alive in the playoffs and faces Klahowya for the fourth time this season at 4 p.m. today at Foss High School. The Cowboys have beaten the Eagles two out of three this season, but all three games were close, with two of them decided by one run and the other by two runs.

In the Seattle Christian game, Cole Dotson was 2 for 3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs, Cody Clark was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Jonah Diehl was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Henry Brebberman and Issac Purser each scored two runs.
