PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles got on track offensively, going up 3-0 on three first-half goals and holding back a North Mason comeback in a 4-2 boys soccer win Tuesday night at Peninsula College’s Wally Sigmar Field.

Josiah Long netted two goals and earned a penalty kick attempt slotted home by Dayton Williams and Xander Maestas added a sweet score as the Riders went up 3-0 30 minutes into the game.

Williams connected with Long for the first goal in the 12th minute.

“It was a great run and a perfectly shaped ball for Josiah to collect and beat the goalkeeper to the left side,” Riders coach Chris Saari said.

Long collected the penalty in the 15th minute and Williams firmly booted it left of the keeper for a 2-0 lead.

Maestas took a throw in from Eli Fischer and headed the ball to himself in behind the defense. “Xander beat the Bulldog goalie to the near post with a volley,” Saari said.

North Mason freshman Andy Chau notched one goal back in the 34th minute.

Maestas found Long in the 70th minute for a 4-1 lead, but North Mason made it interesting late with a 77th-minute goal off a rebound.

“It was a key three league points for PA to get at this stage of the season,” Saari said.

“Xander Maestas was all over the field for PA at the forward position. Dayton Williams assisted a goal and scored on a penalty kick.”

Damon Gundersen was praised for his second-half defense on Chau.

And Saari said Long had a strong showing, scoring the brace of goals and being fouled in the penalty box.

The Riders (1-3, 2-3) host Olympic (0-3, 0-4-1) tonight.

BREMERTON — The Sequim boys soccer team remained unbeaten and unscored upon in Olympic 2A League play with a 4-0 shutout over Olympic.

The Wolves got a shutout performance from keeper Jack Van De Wege, the Wolves’ third scoreless match in a row.

Sequim scored right away in the third minute on a corner kick from Brandon Charters that Rafael Flores headed in.

“That was a real nice goal,” said coach Ken Garling.

The Wolves scored their second goal off a corner, as well. Flores took the corner and Aiden Henninger headed the ball off an Olympic defender and into the goal.

Ethan Knight scored in the 52nd minute on a solo effort. “It was a big shot off his left foot,” Garling said.

Ethan Anderson hit a cross in the 75th minute that Kristian Mingoy got a foot on for a goal.

Garling said the Wolves have a couple of huge games coming up against good league teams from North Kitsap and Bainbridge. Sequim (3-0, 3-1) takes on North Kitsap (2-1, 2-1-1) at home at 6:45 p.m. today and Bainbridge (3-0, 3-0-1) at home Tuesday.

“I’m happy with where we’re at, but we have a long way to go. We’re going to be tested in the next couple of games,” Garling said.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders (0-2, 0-3) struggled on the mound as a group in a home loss to the Trojans.

“We had a hard time throwing strikes,” coach Casey Dietz said. “We had six pitchers go yesterday and we were not around the zone a whole lot. We gave out a lot of free passes, and when we did throw it in the zone, Olympic was able to take advantage of hitter’s counts and they did a good job offensively.”

Dietz said the Riders were improved on the offensive end.

“We cut our strikeouts down and did a much better job,” Dietz said.

Beckett Jarnagin was 3-for-4 with three RBIs on a home run.

“John Vaara was good for us as well, going 3-for-4,” Dietz said.

The Riders host Bainbridge today.
