PREP BASKETBALL: Sequim girls roll past Port Townsend; other area reports

PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend’s girls basketball team hung tough with Sequim for one quarter before the Wolves’ experience won out, and Sequim triumphed 61-24.

“Port Townsend came out playing really well,” Wolves coach Evan Still said.

“It was tied 7-7, and then we were up 18-13 after the first quarter.”

Still praised junior guard Jordan Miller for her strong play in the opening period.

“Jordan Miller kept us in it in the first quarter,” Still said.

“She hit three 3-pointers and had 11 of her 14 points in the first quarter.”

Miller’s 14 led each team in scoring.

A second quarter clampdown on defense led to Sequim outscoring the Redhawks 20-3 for a 38-16 halftime lead.

Adrienne Haggerty continued her strong play with 13 points, eight of them coming in the second quarter, and Hailey Lester and Alyse Armstrong each scored seven for the Wolves.

Port Townsend’s Shenoa Snyder and freshman Kaitlyn Meek led the Redhawks with six apiece.

Sequim (1-0, 4-2) hosts Kingston tonight in a return to Olympic League 2A division play.

Port Townsend (0-5) visits Chimacum tonight for a Olympic League 1A division matchup with the rival Cowboys.

BREMERTON — The Roughriders came close to pulling a road upset against the Trojans but their fourth-quarter comeback bid was unsuccessful.

Olympic’s Kaydra McInnis knocked down a 3-point basket, her only points on the night, to close the third quarter with the Trojans up 30-20 in Monday’s game.

Port Angeles went on a 14-2 run to take a 34-32 lead thanks to scoring from Hayley Baxley, Nizhoni Wheeler and Katyn Flores.

Baxley led the Riders in scoring with 10, Flores had nine and Wheeler scored six with three steals.

Maddie Boe didn’t score but contributed a team-high seven assists and four steals.

“Olympic scored their final four points on free throws, and we failed to score on our last six possessions,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said.

“We got the ball with 12 seconds left, missed a good 3-point opportunity, and missed three put-back attempts.”

Poindexter was pleased with the performance of his team’s defense.

“I thought our defensive effort was the best of the year so far,” Poindexter said.

“Olympic’s top scorers had to work very hard for their points, and we met our pre-game goal of holding their team under 40.”

“Offensively, we began to find ourselves as the game progressed. We still have work to do on passing decisions and execution, as well as making shots inside.”

The Riders (0-1, 2-3) host North Mason tonight at 7 p.m.

CHIMACUM — Finally at full strength after a Pearl Harbor band trip and injuries took away much of their lineup, the Cowboys picked up their first win of the season against Class 2A Bremerton.

“Ball-pressure on defense, sharing the ball well on offense and making the right play and the right pass,” Chimacum coach Trevor Huntingford said of what led the to the victory.

Kiersten Snyder led the Cowboys with 20 points and Mechelle Nesbitt added 17.

“Mechelle and Kiersten can score the ball, but I don’t have a single girl on the team that’s afraid to take the shot,” Huntingford said.

“That’s a shift for us and it’s nice to see.”

Huntingford added that he’s enjoyed Nesbitt’s defensive performance in early games.

“I’m really impressed with Mechelle’s defense, she must be averaging 5 or 6 steals per game at this point,” Huntingford.

Chimacum (1-3) hosts Port Townsend tonight.

A Chimacum graduate, Huntingford said he always looks forward to playing Port Townsend.

PORT ANGELES — Olympic doubled up a rusty Port Angeles team which was playing just its second game of the season and first game in 12 days after a weather-related postponement last Friday.

“You have to tip your hat to Olympic and give credit to them because they played very well,” Roughriders coach Kasey Ulin said.

“They got in us defensively, they controlled the tempo and were the better team tonight.”

The blowout started early, with the Trojans rolling to a 19-6 lead after one quarter and a 40-14 halftime advantage.

“It definitely showed that we have not played a game in 12 days, but that is no excuse,” Ulin said.

“We have to use this to motivate us to continue to get better and improve.”

Hunter Hathaway was the lone Port Angeles player in double figures with 11 points.

Lambros Rogers scored seven and John Boesdenberg added six for the Riders.

Makaleb McInnis led all scorers with 16 for Olympic.

Port Angeles (0-1, 1-1) visits North Mason tonight.

“We have 5 games in 7 days starting [today], so this stretch is going to be a great test for us,” Ulin said.

SEQUIM — The Wolves defense stymied the Redhawks offense all game long to earn a blowout victory.

Sequim had a 19-10 lead after one period and used a 17-0 run just before halftime to pull to a 46-21 advantage.

Alex Barry had a double-double for the Wolves with 21 points on 10 of 21 shooting from the floor and 13 rebounds, 10 of them coming on the offensive glass.

Barry added six steals defensively.

Bailey Earley hit on 6 of 7 shots from the field and scored 13 points for the Wolves.

Port Townsend’s leading scorer, freshman Detrius Kelsall, was held scoreless by the Sequim defense.

Chris Adkins was the lone bright spot offensively for the Redhawks with 16 points.

Sequim (1-0, 4-1) visits Kingston tonight.

BREMERTON — The Cowboys remained winless on the season in a road loss to the Knights.

John Carthum led all scorers with 20 points for the Cowboys (0-5) in Monday’s game.

James Porter added 14.

Something’s got to give in the win/loss column tonight when the Cowboys host winless Port Townsend.
