SILVERDALE — Alex Barry scored 29 points to lead Sequim to a 59-47 win over Klahowya in Olympic League boys basketball action.
Barry made 12 of 22 field-goal attempts and continued his streak of scoring in double figures in each of the Wolves’ six games this season.
Friday’s game was the third time in seven days that Barry surpassed the 20-point mark.
Barry also had eight rebounds, four assists and a team-high three steals for Sequim (4-1 Olympic League, 5-1 overall), which remained within a game of league-leading Bremerton.
Rory Kallappa added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Wolves, Eric Christensen pulled down 12 rebounds, seven offensive, and scored seven points.
Anthony Pinza added seven points and six assists.
Connor Schnuit led Klahowya (0-5, 1-7) with 10 points.
Bremerton 80, Port Angeles 71
BREMERTON — The Roughriders were unable to overcome a 16-point halftime deficit against the Olympic League-leading Knights.
After trailing 46-30 at half, Port Angeles outscored Bremerton by seven points, but it wasn’t enough for the Riders to pull off the upset.
Brady Konopaski and Hayden Gunderson led Port Angeles with 15 points apiece, and Steven Lauderbeck scored 11. The Riders’ leading scorers Hunter Hathaway and Derek Schumacher were held to eight and six points, respectively.
Deonte Dixon scored 27 points for the Knights, who remain undefeated on the season (5-0 Olympic League, 6-0 overall).
Port Angeles (4-2, 5-3) travel to Chehalis to face W.F. West (2-2) on Monday night.
The Riders then host Black Hills (4-5) on Saturday before resuming their league schedule on Jan. 10 with a home game against second-place Sequim.
North Kitsap 77, Port Townsend 40
POULSBO — Paul Spaltenstein led the Redskins with 14 points and Jacob King added 10 in the losing effort.
Cody Russell added seven points for Port Townsend, which fell to 2-4 in Olympic League play.
The Redskins return to action Friday night when it hosts rival Chimacum at the annual Crush in the Slush tournament at Port Townsend High School.
Hoquiam 64, Forks 39
HOQUIAM — Leo Gonzales’ 16-point effort wasn’t enough to lift the Spartans to an Evergreen League win over Grizzlies.
Ish Greene and Ollie Sampson both score seven points each for Forks (1-3 league, 2-5 overall). Colton Raben was held to five points.
“It was another game that we had a ton of turnovers and we didn’t box out, kind of the same story as every game,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said after Friday’s game.
“Until we do that, you won’t see us in the win column too often.
“But, nobody’s giving up.”
The Spartans open the North Beach tournament in Ocean Shores against Tacoma Baptist on Friday.
Girls Basketball
Sequim 48, Klahowya 43
SEQUIM — The Wolves built a 16-5 lead after the first quarter and held on thereafter for an Olympic League win over the Eagles.
Alexas Besand led Sequim with 16 points and Elise Beuke scored 11.
With the win, the upstart Wolves (4-1 league, 4-3 overall) remain in a second-place tie in the league standings with North Kitsap, just one game behind Port Angeles.
Sequim’s next two league tilts are road games against the Vikings (Jan. 7) and the Riders (Jan. 10).
Life Christian 49, Chimacum 37
CHIMACUM — The Cowboys played three strong quarters, but were undone by a scoreless second in a Nisqually League loss to the Eagles.
“Best we have played as a team the whole year,” Chimacum coach Trevor Huntingford said after Friday’s game.
“Played a good first quarter, but fell off in the second, but this time we came back and won the second half and were within six but couldn’t get over the hump.”
“[Freshman] Mechelle Nisbet was outstanding on defense and also hit big shots, scoring 17,” Huntingford said.
“The team as a whole played much better defense and moved the ball much quicker on offense.”
Senior Lauren Thacker scored nine points for the Cowboys, Kiersten Snyder scored five and Audrey Thacker and Shanya Nisbet added three apiece.
Taylor Boles with 14 points to lead Life Christian Academy, which outscored Chimacum 12-0 in the second quarter.
The Cowboys are off until Friday morning when they face Friday Harbor at the Crush in the Slush Tournament at Port Townsend High School.
North Kitsap 47, Port Townsend 38
PORT TOWNSEND — Jewel Johnson scored 22 points as the Redskins battled the Vikings for four quarters on Friday night.
Along with Johnson’s 22, Trish Reeves and Jayde Richardson scored five points apiece for Port Townsend.
Rebekah Baugh and Kristin Brown led North Kitsap with 14 points each.
The Redskins (2-4 Olympic League, 3-4 overall) will play two games at the annual Crush in the Slush Tournament at Port Townsend High School this weekend. They play Squalicum on Friday at 4 p.m. and rival Chimacum on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Hoquiam 51, Forks 38
HOQUIAM — The Grizzlies dominated the middle quarters to earn an Evergreen League win over the Spartans on Friday.
Courtnie Paul led Forks with 10 points, while Erin Weekes and Mercedes Flores contributed nine apiece.
