PREP BASKETBALL: East Jefferson girls clamp down on Sequim

PORT TOWNSEND — The East Jefferson girls basketball team got off to a fast start and got huge contributions from several players in knocking off Sequim 56-36.

The Rivals got up 21-8 after the first quarter Thursday night.

“We have been working on shooting, energy and defense,” said coach Ethan Bates. “And all of those things came to fruition. We put a lot of pressure on them.”

Bates said the team was so fired up for the game that Emily Liske broke her nose during warm-ups.

“We rallied around her and went out there to win for her,” Bates said.

The Rivals held Sequim to 24 percent shooting while shooting 17-for-32 (53 percent) on their 2-point attempts.

Kay Botkin was one of the players for East Jefferson who had a huge game. She shot 4-for-10 on her 3-pointers and scored 19 points to go along with six assists, six rebounds and four steals.

“She was facilitating and knocking down threes,” Bates said.

Kaydence Plotner had 13 points, while Dylin Shockley scored 11.

Bates said Teri Wiley had a great game in her return from a concussion after being out for a few weeks. Wiley had six rebounds, all on the offensive boards, and five steals.

Finally, Penina Vailolo had 14 rebounds to go with eight points.

The Wolves were led by Gracie Chartraw, who scored 24 points and pulled down six rebounds to go with five steals.

Kiley Winter had five points and four steals, while Navaeh Owens had six rebounds. Manuela Valle had five points, five rebounds and four steals.

East Jefferson outrebounded the Wolves 41-30.

“We struggled to rebound and play solid defense and couldn’t buy a basket. Tough night shooting from the field and free throws. East Jefferson did a great job passing and shooting and rebounding,” said coach Joclin Julmist.
