COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula men, women both beat Everett to stay in first

EVERETT — In two matches for first place against dangerous teams, the Peninsula men and women beat Everett by the identical scores of 3-0.

Women’s game

In their second straight match against a tough opponent with a sterling won-loss record, the Peninsula College women showed they are still the class of the North Division.

Last week, the women beat an unbeaten Whatcom team 4-0. On Saturday, they went up against an Everett team with a 3-0-1 record in the North and 7-1-1 record overall, gunning to knock the Pirates out of first place. The result was nearly the same, with the Pirates winning 3-0.

Peninsula got all of its goals early and late. Chimacum’s Grace Johnson, her fourth of the year, got Peninsula on the board early with a goal in the third minute on an assist from Kayla Alcott.

The game remained a tight 1-0 battle, despite Peninsula dominating the shots total, until the 79th minute when the Pirates’ top striker Sam Oliveira finally broke through with a tally to make it 2-0. Her goal, her 10th of the year (tops in the NWAC), was assisted by Zahori Toledo.

Halle Nottage added an unassisted goal in the 84th minute.

It was the Pirates’ third-straight shutout as they have not allowed a goal now in 299 minutes of play. It was also Peninsula’s sixth shutout of the year.

While the two teams came in to the game with similar won-loss records, you wouldn’t know it from the statistics. Peninsula had 14 shots to the Trojans’ one shot. The Pirates forced 10 Trojans saves to just one for Peninsula.

Peninsula (5-0-0, 9-0-0 15 points) next plays at Shoreline (1-3-0, 1-4-2) on Saturday.

Men’s game

The men went up against an undefeated Everett team, coming off an emotional win last week against two-time defending North champion Whatcom. It was the first time Peninsula had beaten Whatcom since 2016 and the men could’ve been forgiven if they had a letdown against Everett. However, there was absolutely no letdown as the men dominated an opponent that came in to the match with a record of 6-0-3.

Scoring early was Mason Haubrich in the 15th minute with an assist to Manny Lopez-Morales. The game remained 1-0 until the second half when Yuya Yamamoto scored in the 51st minute unassisted.

Nico Hernandez added an insurance goal in the 61st minute with an assist to Hide Inoue.

Evan Scholes made three saves to earn the shutout. The Pirates had 11 shots on goal and 18 shots overall to the Trojans’ eight.

Peninsula (4-0-1, 7-0-1 13 points) next plays at Shoreline (1-3-0, 2-6-0) on Saturday.
