COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Peninsula men get winning bucket with 3 seconds left; Women win on 11 3-pointers

EDMONDS — The Peninsula College men’s basketball team got a layup from Ese Onakpoma with three seconds left in the game to edge Edmonds 80-78 in a road nailbiter Saturday.

The Tritons got a 3-point shot off at the final buzzer that was no good. With the win, the Pirates climbed back to .500 on the season.

Meanwhile, the Peninsula College women remained in first place, hitting 11 3-pointers while beating Edmonds 73-58 in a game that was not as close as the final score showed.

In the men’s game, the Pirates got off to a fast start, hitting four 3-pointers in the first 3:45 of the game to take a 17-4 lead. They were able to maintain a lead for most of the game, and seemed in good shape at 73-63 with 4:33 left in the game.

However, the Tritons went on an 8-0 run to make the score 73-71 with 2:49 left. Port Angeles’ Wyatt Dunning responded with two buckets and an offensive rebound to make it 78-73 with 1:01 left.

Again, the Tritons came back on the Pirates, getting a three-point play at 0:48 left in the game to make it 78-76. They made another basket with 19 seconds left to tie the game before Onakpoma’s layup sealed the Pirates’ victory.

Dunning hit four 3-pointers and led the team with 20 points. Javon Ervin had a solid all-around game with three 3-pointers, 19 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Onakpoma had 14 points, and Antonio Odum hit a pair of treys and scored 12.
