PA’s Coronel competes at nationals

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Former Port Angeles High School wrestling standout Roberto Coronel recently competed at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships.

Coronel, a freshman at Central Washington University, advanced to the 285-pound quarterfinals after winning his first two matches, pinning Alfred State’s Mitchell Lattucca at 56 seconds and earning a 9-3 decision against Bryce Hanley of Penn State DuBois.

He lost 5-2 to Defiance College’s Aaron Leciejewski in the quarterfinals, and was eliminated with a 7-2 loss to John Puleo of South Florida.

Coronel advanced to the national championships by winning the Northwest Conference Championship in February.

He finished his first season at Central Washington with a 12-9 overall record.

He was a three-time state medal winner for the Roughriders in his high school career.

Rider hoops benefit

PORT ANGELES — The Rumble on the Ridge, an eight-team men’s basketball tournament, will be held at Port Angeles High School on Saturday and Sunday, April 23-24.

The tournament will raise funds for the Port Angeles High School boys basketball team’s summer program.

The tournament has a four-game guarantee, with pool play scheduled Saturday and single-elimination games Sunday.

The entry fee is $300 per team.

Members of the tournament-champion team will receive Dri-Fit quarter-zip jackets; the second-place team will get hooded sweatshirts; the third-place squad will receive crew-neck sweatshirts; and the fourth-place finishers will get T-shirts.

Those named first- and second-team all-tournament also will receive Dri-Fit long-sleeve shirts.

The tournament MVP will receive a $100 gift certificate, and the winner of the Roughrider Award, which represents sportsmanship, hard work and competitive drive, gets a new basketball.

A 3-point competition also will be held, and the winner earning a $100 gift certificate to Athlete’s Choice in Port Angeles.

For $10, players will receive 10 3-point shots, and they can participate as many times as they would like.

The top four shooters will participate in a shootout Sunday, in which they will have 90 seconds to shoot from five spots on the floor.

Raffles, including a $50 gift certificate to Next Door Gastro Pub, also are planned.

Admission is free, with donations supporting Port Angeles boys basketball.

Tournament sponsors are 7 Cedars Casino, Wilder Auto, Athlete’s Choice and Next Door Gastro Pub.

Hoops fundraising

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys AAU program is raising funds to send members of the Port Angeles High School varsity boys basketball team to the Jam On It Basketball Tournament in Las Vegas May 28-30.

The program is hoping to build on the Roughriders’ resurgence, which included the program’s first district playoff win since the 2011-2012 season.

Donations are sought from individuals and businesses to help with costs associated with the trip.

Businesses that donate will receive recognition on the Port Angeles AAU website.

Donations are tax-deductible. The program’s nonprofit registration number is available upon request.

Basketball tourney

PORT ANGELES — The April Fools’ Extravaganza, a youth basketball tournament with divisions for boys and girls teams from fourth grade through high school, will be hosted by the Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Department on Saturday and Sunday, April 9-10.

There is a four-game guarantee and a $250 entry fee per team.
