Navy Band brings brass to maritime fest

PORT ANGELES — On Saturday and Sunday, Navy Band Northwest’s Brass Band will perform at the Port Angeles Maritime Festival.

Their free performances will begin at 10:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. at the Port Angeles City Pier, at the north end of Lincoln Street.

On Sunday, their performances will begin at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Port Angeles Boat Haven on Marine Drive.

The Navy Band Northwest Brass Band performs throughout the Pacific Northwest for public concerts and educational outreach.

The Brass Band is comprised of three trumpets, two trombones, a sousaphone and drum set.

The group of Navy musicians’ versatility shines with a diverse repertoire including jazz, New Orleans standards, funk and an assortment of popular cover songs, according to a news release.

With more than 400 musical support requests each year, the 35-member band can appear as a large ensemble for parades and ceremonies, but can also split into small ensembles to provide musical varieties that fit the needs of each civilian and military request, varying from classical and contemporary chamber music to jazz and rock ’n’ roll.

Navy Band Northwest is under the leadership of its director, Lt. Bruce Mansfield, and falls under the operational command of Rear Adm. Gary Mayes, commanding officer of Navy Region Northwest.
