Athlete’s Choice earns two Babe Ruth victories

PORT ANGELES — Athlete’s Choice picked up two wins in three Olympic Junior Babe Ruth baseball contests last week.

Westport edged Athlete’s Choice 10-7 behind a strong pitching performance from K.C. Spencer.

Spencer threw five innings and gave up a hit, four walks and three runs.

Bryce Lauderback hit a three-run home run over the 350-foot wall at Volunteer Field, his first of the year, and Eric Emery had a triple for Athlete’s Choice.

Westport was lead offensively by Trenton Teeter, who went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, and Andrew Pena who went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Athlete’s Choice then shut out Forks 10-0.

Brody Merritt earned the win, going all five innings and allowing a hit and a walk with 10 strikeouts.

Ethan Flodstrom went 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and a run, and Lauderback added a double, two RBIs and a run for Athlete’s Choice.

Derek Hinsdale also went 2 for 3, with a double, three RBIs and a run.

Athlete’s Choice earned revenge for an 20-1 loss to Sequim earlier this season with a 5-4 win.

Eric Emery went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Derek Hinsdale was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run.

Athlete’s Choice batters walked seven times and three batters were hit by pitches to help score its five runs.

Brayden Phegley had a nice night defensively and also had the game-winning RBI, putting down a successful safety squeeze in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Flodstrom and Merritt combined to throw a four-hitter.

Westport rallies to win

PORT ANGELES — Westport rallied to top Local 8-7 in Olympic Junior Babe Ruth baseball action last week.

Local came out firing and scored six runs in the first inning off key hits from Seth Schofield, Tate Gamier, Tony Gregory and Angelo Ramos.

In the bottom half of the first for Westport, K.C. Spencer walked, was bunted to third base by Tyler Bowen and hit home by Andrew Pena to make it 6-1 in the first.

Slater Bradley took the mound in the top of the second, and pitched the next 4 1/3 innings, shutting Local down only allowing only one hit, to Devin Batchelor.

Meanwhile, Westport had a strong second inning at the plate. Singles by Spencer and Daniel Basden helped Westport score four runs to make the score 6-5.

Westport then tied the game in the bottom of the third. Jake Allen hit a one-out double and then came home on a hit by Basden.

Westport struck again in the fourth, taking a two-run lead with key hits from Bowen and Bradley.

Local’s Brady Shimko pitched his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth after giving up hits to Andrew Pena, Trenton Teter and Bradley.

Local then got one run back in the top of the sixth when Schofield stole hime.

The threat ended there, though, as Jadon Seibel caught the ball on a suicide squeeze and doubled the runner at third base to end the inning.

Andrew Pena earned the save.

Bradley earned the win with six strikouts and only one run on one hit.

Hi-Tech tops Laurel

PORT ANGELES — Hi-Tech defeated Laurel Lanes 8-3 in 12U Cal Ripken baseball.

Nathan Seelye tripled and John Vaara and Kamron Meadows doubled for Hi-Tech in Tuesday’s game.

Meadows combined with Landon Seibel and Adam Watkins to strike out 10 batters.

Laurel Lanes’ Jon Aranda and Zane Glassock had nice at-bats, each scoring a run, and Maddox Pangaro made nifty defensive plays at third base and also led off the top of the sixth with a hit that eventually led to a run.

KONP dialed in

PORT ANGELES — KONP overcame a fast start by Kiwanis in 16U softball play to win 17-5.

After putting down KONP in order in the top of the first inning, Kiwanas got out to an early 3-0 lead on five walks and an RBI single by Issabelle Cottam.

KONP came back in the top of the second to score six runs. KNOP had the benefit of five walks in their half of the inning, as well as an RBI single and double from Gabby Valadez and Ashley Adamire, respectively.

KONP pitcher Izzy Dennis allowed no runs over the next two innings, while KONP added to their lead with hits from Casey Hale, Starla Temeres, Mackenzie Carney and a solo home run by Makiah Sperry.

Sperry came in to pitch the fourth inning and gave up two runs to Kiwanis on walks to Issabelle and Jassamine Cottam, and a two-run double to Abbi Cottam.

Co-op blanks Forks

FORKS — Gavin Velarde tossed a shutout and helped out at the plate as Sequim Co-op went on the road to pick up a 4-0 Olympic Junior Babe Ruth baseball win over Forks.

Co-op plated three runs in the first inning of Tuesday’s win, with Gavin Velarde, Jonathan Serrano and Johnnie Young each driving in a run.

Serrano drove in another run in the third inning to make it 4-0.

Velarde struck out 13 in the complete-game shutout.

Paint and Carpet wins in a rout

PORT ANGELES — Paint and Carpet Barn avenged an earlier loss to Olympic Labor Council in a significant way, winning 13-1 in four innings of 12U softball play.

Tuesday’s win improves Barn to 11-2 this season.

Barn plated three runs in the first and third innings, one in the second and rumbled to six in the fourth.

Jada Cargo lead the team, going 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBIs. Brooklynn Alton went 2 for 2 with a walk and two runs.

Lucah Folden pitched for Paint and Carpet Barn and earned her sixth win of the season.

Olympic Labor Council finished with four this, all coming in the first inning.

Reya Adkins singled and scored Council’s only run. Anna Petty, Katie Law and Anna Brant also had hits.

Swain’s bags Local

PORT ANGELES — Strong pitching from Tim Adams helped Swain’s to a 6-2 win over Local 155 in Olympic Junior Babe Ruth baseball.

Adams earned the victory by allowing four hits and striking out six in four innings.

Milo Whitman finished the game off on the mound and helped himself at the plate with a double and two singles.

Bo and Dane Bradow, Joel Wood and Tanner Lunt also had hits for Swain’s.

Montgomery Bullock went 3 for 4 to lead Local.

Derek Bowechop doubled and scored and Brady Shimko, Seth Scofield, Devon Batchelor and Anthony Gregorie eacn tallied hits in the loss.

Massman slams

PORT ANGELES — PA Power defeated Boulevard Wellness 11-3 in 12U softball play Friday.

Both teams started strong behind the pitching of Elizabeth Groff for PA Power and Ella Holland for Boulevard.

PA Power broke the game open in the second inning when Mady Massman hit a grand slam to push the sixth run of the inning across.

Boulevard battled back with three runs in the bottom of the second, but PA Power added five more runs and held Boulevard scoreless for the rest of the game.

Tranco takes two

PORT ANGELES —Tranco claimed a pair of 12U softball victories from Olympic Labor Council.

The teams resumed a 15-15 tie game that was suspended May 13 due to darkness.

It took three more innings to break the tie.

Olympic Labor Council scored one run the top of the sixth, but Tranco scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to clinch a 17-15 win.

Peyton Hefton pitched all three innings for Tranco, striking out nine.

Anna Petty pitched all three innings for Council and had five strikeouts.

Reya Adkins and Cydne Moore each hit singles for Council.

Coral Lilley and Sage Hefton each singled for Tranco.

Grace Roening scoring the tying run on Lilley’s RBI single down the third-base line, and Camille Stensgard scoring the winning run by sliding into home on a passed ball.

Tranco kept it going in the second game, winning 12-3.

Hefton again was the winning pitcher, striking out eight and walking two.

Zoe Smithson and Aiesha Mathis had two hits apiece.

Emi Halberg, Lily Halberg, Roening and Hefton each had hits.

Petty and Peyton Rudd were the pitchers for Council. Petty struck out three.

Nacia Bohman went 2 for 2 and scored a run for Council, while Adkins, Anna Menkal and Raven Taylor all added hits.

Taylor and Moore scored Olympic Labor Council’s other two runs.

Tranco’s record is 9-4.

Elks gores Local

PORT ANGELES — Elks defeated Local 155 13-3 in a 12U Cal Ripken baseball at Lincoln Park on Thursday.

Jake Jacobsen, Seth Woods, Connor Bear and Wyatt Hall each collected two hits for Elks.

Elks’ 10-year-old pitcher Hunter Wright stole the show in the final inning by retiring the heart of Local’s order on just three pitches.

James Burkhardt and Colby Groves each had two hits for Local.

Barn wins again

PORT ANGELES — Paint and Carpet Barn won its 12th game of the season 8-5 over Jim’s Pharmacy 12U softball action.

With the win, Paint and Carpet clinched first place and the first seed at the city’s softball playoffs.

Jada Cargo led the team at-bat, going 2 for 3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs.

Katlynn Glass tripled and Ava Brenkman and Jaeleigh Blattner each had key hits to help Paint and Carpet.

Destiny Smith pitched and earned the win, striking out seven and allowing four hits and a walk.

Anna Edwards, Alyssa Waterhouse and Kristina Shumway had three of Jim’s five hits and scored four of the team’s five runs.

Edwards struck out eight on the mound.
