PASCO — Two days of steady golf pushed Chimacum to fourth place as a team at the Class 1A boys golf state tournament at Sun Willows Golf Course.

“They performed pretty well on both days,” coach Mitch Black said of his four golfers.

“Today it was 88 degrees with not much wind, so you couldn’t ask for better conditions. The greens weren’t overly fast.”

James Porter shot 83 Thursday after a first-day 79 to finish tied for 24th with teammate Marcus Bufford.

Bufford had rounds of 80 Thursday and 82 Wednesday.

Senior Jack Hilt closed his Cowboys career with a 7-over-par 79. He shot 84 on Wednesday and ended up in 27th place.

Chris Bainbridge recorded an 85 Thursday after an 84 Wednesday to finish 36th.

It was the 38th state appearance in 39 seasons for Black-coached teams.

“A great way to close it out,” said Black, who is retiring (see Page B6).

Port Townsend senior Zack Glover closed out his career with a tie for 29th.

He shot an 84 Thursday and an 80 in Wednesday’sopening round.

Cle Elum-Roslyn’s Nick Baker finished 4-under-par and won the individual title over Ryan Maine of Freeman with a birdie on the third playoff hole.

Seattle Academy claimed the team title.

Sequim girls seventh

Sequim’s Alex McMenamin and Kailee Price helped the Wolves to seventh place at the Class 2A girls state tournament at par-72 MeadowWood Golf Club in Liberty Lake.

McMenamin earned her second top-10 finish in as many seasons, placing in a tie for ninth after rounds of 84 Thursday and 81 Wednesday.

She finished third as a freshman last season.

Price ended up 30th after carding a 99 Thursday and an 88 Wednesday.

“Today wasn’t quite as good as Wednesday,” Sequim coach Gary Kettel said.

“Conditions were tougher today and I think they got tired.

“It was hot today, above 80 [degrees] and neither player played very well on the back nine. They found some out of bounds and some water.”

The state tournament trip capped a successful season for the Wolves.

“It really was,” Kettel said.

“They went undefeated, won the league title and we got three girls to state, and two to the second day.”

Ephrata’s Kenedee Peters finished 5-under-par to win the individual title by 19 strokes.

The Tigers also won the team championship.

Shea finishes 10th

Sequim’s Jack Shea tied for 10th to claim the area’s best boys finish at the Class 2A state golf tournament at Liberty Lake Golf Course.

Shea shot a round of even-par 70 Thursday to continue a consistent run at the state tournament.

He played his final 31 holes at the tournament at even par after starting Wednesday’s first day 5-over-par through his first five holes.

Shea’s goal before the tournament was a spot in the top 10.

Washington State University commit Aaron Whalen of Ephrata won his second individual championship.

Whalen shot rounds of 66 and 67 to finish 7-under-par, three strokes ahead of Bellingham’s Nick Nolan.

Sammamish won the team title.

Roughriders 10th

Port Angeles finished 10th as a team in coach Mark Mitrovich’s final trip to state after 30 years in charge of the program.

Seniors Alex Atwell and Mason Jackson came in tied for 29th and 37th places, respectively.

Atwell posted an 80 Thursday after opening with a 76, while Jackson fired an 84 Thursday after a 79 in the first round.
