WINSTON-SALEM, N.C — Middlebury College’s Alison Maxwell won the national championship in the women’s mile at the 2015 NCAA Division III indoor track and field championships Saturday.
Maxwell, a 2011 Port Angeles High School graduate, sprinted to the finish line ahead of the field to become Middlebury’s first individual national champion in 10 years and the Panthers’ first female champion since 2000.
Maxwell, a senior at Middlebury (Vermont), crossed the finish with a time of 4:56.17, just ahead of Eastern Mennonite’s Hannah Chappell-Dick (4:56.81).
On Friday, Maxwell ran with the Panthers’ indoor distance medley relay team that finished fourth.
The team of Maxwell, Alexandra Morris, Paige Fernandez and Erzie Nagy finished the relay in 11:49.60.
Hopson homers twice
LUBBOCK, Texas — Sequim graduate Lea Hopson recorded her second career multi-home run game Saturday to lead the Texas Tech softball team to its second run-rule victory over Mississippi Valley State in as many days 16-4.
Hopson, a senior, connected on a solo home run in the third inning and then powered a two-run shot in the fifth, which was her team-leading ninth homer of the season.
Hopson also added a two-run double in the first inning to finish 3 for 3 overall and matching her career high with five RBI.
The 2011 Sequim High School graduate will return to the state of Washington for three games this week.
Texas Tech (14-15) plays at Seattle University on Wednesday at 6 p.m., followed by a doubleheader against the University of Washington on Thursday at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Hopson’s other multiple home run game in her career came on Feb. 8, 2014, when she belted two in only her fourth game with the Red Raiders.
Hopson now has 16 home runs in her career, moving her into a tie for 10th all-time in Texas Tech history.
